Leaf varieties of parsley are suitable for growing in pots, simply because root parsley requires planting in deeper containers and is not advisable to grow it at home. We are primarily interested in fresh herbs.

However, not all varieties respond equally well to very frequent pruning, but in the kitchen we can pinch bushes in a pot regularly.

How to grow parsley on a window

Plastic boxes are best suited for growing parsley on a windowsill. It is more convenient to have deep ones, but not too long. It is advisable to place not one large box on the windowsill, but 2-3 small ones. The height of the box must be at least 15 cm.

Be sure to make drainage holes in the box if there are none already. You can do without drainage, but the holes should be large, approximately 5-7 mm in diameter, along the entire bottom of the box. To prevent the soil from spilling out, place a piece of mosquito net on the bottom.

The box must have a tray for draining water.

The soil for parsley should be nutritious, and the acidity level (pH) should be in the range of 6.5-7.0.

Despite its apparent simplicity, not everyone succeeds in making parsley from seeds. To ensure successful germination, let’s turn to seed stratification.

To do this, place the parsley seeds on a damp cloth, cover the top with a small piece of gauze and leave to keep warm for several days. It is important that the seeds do not float in water, but are slightly damp.

After 2-3 days, without removing it from the cloth, you need to carefully squeeze out excess water from it, wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer (0 - +2°C) for a month before the expected sowing time.

This little secret significantly increases seed germination and speeds up germination.

And here is the second secret to increasing seed germination. The fact is that a large amount of essential oils makes it difficult for this herb to germinate. Therefore, the seeds can be placed in a linen bag and placed under running water for about three hours. Of course, in modern conditions of energy and water conservation, pouring water on seeds for three hours is unreasonable. But there is an old-fashioned way - to place a bag of seeds in the toilet tank for a day, of course, if the whole family is at home and the water is regularly drained from the tank. You can replace this procedure by replacing the water every two hours or more often. But remember, it makes sense to sparge parsley for 18-24 hours.

Sowing parsley

  • Prepare the soil for planting: disinfect store soil for seedlings or growing vegetables, or disinfect garden soil in the oven, on a wide baking sheet. This is necessary to get rid of possible pests and infectious agents.

  • Parsley shoots appear 14-20 days after sowing.

Caring for parsley at home

There is no need to cover the boxes with film if they are in a warm room and not on the balcony. The optimal temperature on the windowsill before emergence is within 19-20°C; after emergence it is advisable to lower it to 15-18°C during the day and 10-12°C at night.

All care for crops boils down to draining the water from the pan and slightly loosening the soil after watering so that a dense crust does not form.

There is another little secret: parsley is tolerant of water hardness, but after a couple of weeks hard water leaves a salt coating in the upper layers of the soil, it somewhat cements the soil, disrupting aeration, which is why loosening is required. But it is very easy to disrupt the growth of seedlings with careless movements, so it is easier to water the parsley with soft water, even boiled, until the young plants grow up and can be loosened painlessly.

Dense shoots need to be thinned out - parsley grows as a bush and each plant needs enough space and light for the shoots to grow strong. Leaf parsley should be thinned 2 weeks after germination, the distance between plants is about 5 cm; as it grows, thinning can be done again, leaving about 10 cm between the bushes.

Why such a distance and not more? In the garden, if you were planting plants in a bed, the distance between the bushes should be 20-25 cm. However, in a pot or box, the plants are restrained in growth and do not grow as quickly and spreadingly as in free ground, so they require less space. But this rule only applies to leaf parsley.

By the way, the famous Mooskrause 2 variety was bred by the Germans, and it is very popular among them to grow kitchen herbs in pots on balconies or in the kitchen on a windowsill, so this variety is distinguished by its compactness of both tops and root system.

Lighting

Good lighting is also important. Parsley grows in the garden in almost any place - in light and shaded areas. But at home, parsley may lack light, you can determine this by the elongated petioles of the leaves - when there is little light, they are thin and pale in color. In addition, seedlings suffering from a lack of light noticeably lean toward the glass.

If this is your case, move the parsley to a sunnier window sill or add additional lighting (fluorescent or LED). These two types of lamps can be placed very close to the leaves - at a distance of 5 cm, directly above the boxes with seedlings.

Remember that without additional lighting in central Russia, parsley can be grown when sowing seeds no earlier than mid-February.

Important: it is advisable to start cutting parsley for culinary purposes for the first time no earlier than 2 months after germination. In this case, do not cut the branches at the root, but leave the petioles about 5 cm.

Feeding

You can start feeding parsley a month after germination. Do not overuse fertilizers - it will not become thicker, and elements not sold from the soil are deposited on the soil surface in the form of salts. Do not forget that plant culture is different when grown in a pot and in open ground.

It is best to feed with vermicompost; many options are available in liquid form. Feed approximately once every 2 weeks, in the dose indicated on the package.

You can also use any complex fertilizer for vegetables.

You can grow parsley in a pot all year round, but in the summer it is advisable to move it to the balcony. Water as it dries, but when it gets colder in the fall - after a good drying. To make the bush last as long as possible, do not forget about fertilizing. Once every 2-3 weeks it is necessary to feed the bush (a teaspoon of Agrolife in the top layer of soil, or watering with Rostom - 1 cap per 2 liters of water).

Of course, you can buy parsley, dill and green onions in the store. But for some reason it seems that store-bought dill and parsley are too coarse?

Naturally, your own, homemade parsley is tastier, more tender and more fragrant.

How to grow parsley on a windowsill in winter to enjoy its aromas and add green vitamins to daily and holiday dishes?

There are only two ways:

  • sowing and growing from seeds
  • forcing greens from root vegetables

Growing parsley from seeds

Sowing and growing parsley from seeds on a windowsill is similar to growing it in open ground, but there are some nuances:

  • We sow in boxes or pots in almost the same way as in open ground, with the preparation of seeds for sowing (disinfection and soaking so that they germinate faster). The difference is that there is not enough space. But you still need to try not to thicken the crops, even taking into account the fact that you need greens. Too much density will lead to excessive stretching of plants towards the light and as a result you will get twigs instead of lush greenery.
  • Naturally, drainage holes and drainage should be made in the container, since excess moisture in the soil leads to a lack of oxygen in it and plant diseases
  • Until the seeds sprout, you need to take special care to keep the soil moist. It is better to cover the crops with film and not ventilate for long.
  • parsley does well at temperatures from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. If it is cooler than 15 degrees, it will freeze or grow slowly. If it is above 20 degrees, the soil will begin to dry out quickly and so will the parsley.

To get good parsley, you also need to meet one more very important condition:

  1. choose varieties of parsley that will grow well in low light conditions. And since you only need greens, it is advisable to choose a variety with a small root crop but a lush crown. You also need to pay attention to the timing of ripening and choose the earliest varieties possible. For example, Astra is an early ripening curly variety, the greens of which are suitable for consumption within 65 days after sowing. Or other early leaf varieties of parsley: Green Pearl, Fragrant Alley, Grandmother's Garden, Vorozheya.

Growing parsley from seeds on a windowsill is very suitable for those who do not have a garden: in the spring, when the weather warms up, you can take the container with parsley out onto the balcony, and in the fall you can bring it back into the apartment, and it will delight you with greenery all year and even longer.

And yet, in winter it is easier and faster to obtain parsley by forcing it from root vegetables.

Growing parsley in winter from roots has one big advantage over growing from seeds: speed. If you sow with seeds, you can expect the first cut of greenery only after a couple of months. And, if you plant a root crop in a pot with soil and start watering it, the greenery will begin to grow almost immediately: due to the forces in the root crop itself.

The best way to grow parsley on a windowsill in winter is easy and simple: dig up a couple of parsley bushes (roots) directly from the garden bed in late autumn, just before the cold weather. It’s even better when it’s about to snow. By this time, the parsley will have already gone through a short period of “wintering”, which will have a beneficial effect on its “revival” and the forcing of greenery.

If you have different types of parsley growing in your garden, then choose the one that was planted on greens: it has a smaller root than root parsley. Dig with a clod of earth, then the survival rate will be better and it will be easier to determine the volume and size of the pot (a 5 liter bucket will do).
