Replace water pipes in a private house. Repair and replacement of water supply system

Repairing or replacing a water supply system is one of the most serious and difficult tasks, since the lack of water causes a lot of difficulties.

The following signs indicate a breakdown in the water supply system:

  • noticeable decrease in water pressure;
  • When you turn on the water, you hear an uncharacteristic noise;
  • Rust particles and other elements were found in the water.

Noise in pipes occurs when water leaks, caused by the formation of a plug or fistula. In addition, noise in the pipes can be heard when the plumbing breaks down or there is a water leak in the neighbors’ apartment, and whistling from the pipes indicates a narrowing of the clearance.

The need for pipe diagnostics arises in the case of prolonged use of the water supply system, constant noise, low pressure and contamination.

Experts conduct an inspection to identify the causes of emerging problems using one of three technologies:

  1. Use of safe chemicals.
  2. Pulse water hammer.
  3. Hydrodynamic flushing.

Repair and replacement of cold and hot water supply systems in Moscow: reasons and tips

Often this procedure is required due to pipe corrosion. One of the common methods of repairing a pipeline is to install a clamp with a rubber seal on the leaking area, and in the case of a water supply system being out of service, replacing the pipes. Our company recommends purchasing plastic pipes, known for their durability and ease of installation and use.

Installation of plastic pipes requires the presence of ball valves, a filter system, meters, fittings and adapters. During installation, the system is connected to the riser through a ball valve, then the filter, meters and, ultimately, the water supply.

The most rational approach would be to install polyethylene pipes, which can be purchased from our company at an affordable price. Such pipes are famous for their strength and reliability, and are environmentally friendly.

The only caveat is that HDPE pipes will not replace hot water supply pipes, since they are destroyed under the influence of high temperatures. Hot water pipes are replaced with heat-resistant ones made of cross-linked polyethylene. The guaranteed service life of such pipes is 50 years.

Repair and replacement of the water supply system, the price of which today depends on the volume of work, is carried out by any plumbing service.

The pipe replacement process consists of the following steps:

  1. Dismantling of the previous water supply system.
  2. Marking and fastening of pipes.
  3. Fastening pipes with fittings.
  4. Diagnostics of pipes, water supply.

Cost of services for replacement and repair of water pipes

Hydrodynamic flushing of pipes, which is one of the most common services, will cost clients approximately 3,000 rubles, and cutting into the water supply system will cost from 1,300 rubles. Repair and replacement of the water supply system, pumps, risers, pipes in the country, for example, will be done at a price based on the severity of the problem.

The cost of repairing and replacing the water supply system in a private home will depend on the amount of work performed and the previous installation system. As a rule, specialists charge 250 rubles per linear meter for installing a pipeline. A linear meter is cheaper when dismantling old pipes.

The price for a groove in a concrete or brick wall is set taking into account the diameter and ranges from 200 to 1200 rubles. For the installation of shut-off valves you will need to prepare about 200 rubles per unit, and replacing water supply pipes will cost around 500 rubles. A linear meter of PDN can be purchased for 125 rubles. Polypropylene pipes and Rehau pipes will cost a little more.

When building a new house or major renovation of an existing one, there is a high probability that the old plumbing will need to be repaired or rebuilt in a new way. In order to do this, you need, firstly, to have the skills to work with plumbing, and, secondly, all the necessary tools and materials for the work. The general diagram of the water supply system in a private house looks like this:

General diagram of water supply in a private house

Water supply installation

As can be seen from the figure, the water supply system in a private house is not simple. Initially, water must be supplied using a submersible pump (1), after which it goes to a booster pump with a hydraulic accumulator and pressure regulator (3), where its flow and pressure are equalized. There is an electrical cabinet (4) to control the submersible pump. An automatic system is installed there that turns off the submersible pump based on a signal from an electromanometer installed on the pipe, or based on a signal from a dry running sensor installed in the well. The installation of such a sensor is mandatory, since otherwise the submersible pump may break down, since it must constantly operate in a state immersed in water.

After equalizing the pressure and flow, the water is supplied to water treatment and water purification. Through filters (5-10), water flows to the water heater (11), where it becomes hot and from where it is distributed through the home water supply network. To obtain purified drinking water, you can install an additional filter (12).

Reasons for replacing an old water supply

If we don’t talk about laying a water supply system when building a new house, there may be several reasons to replace the water supply system in a private house:

  1. Water pipes are clogged and cannot ensure good water supply; they have to be constantly cleaned or be content with poor water quality.
  2. New water consumption points are being added, for example, Jacuzzis, which require good flow and pressure of water. In order to ensure these conditions, both partial and complete modernization of the water supply network of a private home is possible.
  3. The central water supply does not provide water in the required quantity and proper quality, not only in terms of flow rate and pressure, but also in terms of physical and chemical properties. In this case, several ways to solve the problem are possible: from installing water treatment systems and a booster pump to installing a well near the house.
  4. Modernization of the old water supply system with the replacement of outdated equipment and pipes with new, more reliable and functional ones.

Before redoing something, you need to decide which remodeling path to take next. To do this, it is best to describe the advantages and disadvantages of the existing water supply system and think through the most optimal ways to eliminate them; as a result, it will be possible to approximately calculate how much it costs to bring water into the house.

Water supply system

The water supply system of a private house consists of the following main elements:

Input Source

There are several options for supplying water to your home:

  1. Supply from the central water supply system. This option has both advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

  • No large investments are required to install such expensive equipment as a well.
  • It is possible to supply water in the absence of electricity in the network.

Flaws:

  • The cost of water is more expensive than if you supply water to your house from a well.
  • The water is not of the same quality and volume as needed.
  • Non-autonomy, that is, water supply may be intermittent.
  1. Water from our own water source. A well, a well or a pond can be considered as such a water source.

Advantages:

  • Autonomy. The water supply depends only on the voltage in the electrical network.
  • Water of the right quality and in the right quantity.
  • The cost of 1m³ is cheaper than from a central water supply
  • In most cases, no additional water treatment or purification is required.

Flaws:

  • High cost of work on arrangement of a well or a well.
  • Dependence of water supply from a well on an external source of electricity.

Before drilling a well, you must first do a hydrogeological survey of the area. To do this, it is best to contact an organization that specializes in this.

Water supply system

Depending on the selected input, this can be either a conventional pump with a hydraulic accumulator or a submersible pump from a well. If the water supply from the water supply network is stable, then you can do without a pump.

Filtration system

For preliminary water treatment and water purification, various filter units can be used. There are several types of filters:

  • Mechanical – designed to purify water from various impurities: rust from pipes, sand from a well, for example. They come in different designs: mesh, disk, sand and gravel.

For home water supply, mesh filters and filters with a replaceable cartridge are mainly used. They are easy to maintain and relatively inexpensive. It should be borne in mind that they require periodic cleaning; there are also models with an automatic self-cleaning system, but they are much more expensive. A mechanical coarse filter with a replaceable cartridge is shown in the figure below.

Mechanical coarse filter

As can be seen from the figure, the filter design consists mainly of a housing and a replaceable cartridge inside. If the cartridge is severely clogged, it must be replaced with a new one. As for mesh or disk filters, the cartridges are not changed, but simply washed with running water. Such filters have a special tap for this purpose. If there is no such tap, then if the filter becomes clogged, it must be disassembled and washed with running water. To determine whether the filter is clogged, two pressure gauges are installed on it: at the outlet and at the inlet. If the difference in the readings of these pressure gauges is more than 1 atm, the filter must be cleaned.

  • Filters with catalyst. Such filters contain a special catalyst that draws out toxic salts, depending on the type of catalyst.
  • Disinfecting filters. In such filters, water is disinfected from various bacteria using a special lamp.
  • Reverse osmosis filter. In this filter, water passes through a special membrane that allows only water molecules to pass through, without molecules of other impurities. This type of water purification is considered one of the best, but the installation itself and its maintenance are not cheap.

Reverse osmosis filter

The figure shows that the filter consists of several stages of purification, gradually bringing the water quality to the desired state. After such purification, water is freed from all harmful impurities and salts. In order to use such water, a special tap is installed in the kitchen, from which water is taken only for drinking and cooking.

In order to decide which filtration system to use, you must first do a physical, chemical and bacterial analysis of the water. This can be done in a special organization. They can also give recommendations on choosing filters to improve water quality.

Water heating system

To heat water, you can use various devices that run on gas, electricity or solid fuel. You can also heat water using solar water heaters.

To supply water for heating, as well as for the needs of the bathroom, the water can be unfiltered or filtered only through a coarse filter. You need to remember this and not use such water for drinking and cooking.

Plumbing

To distribute water to points of water consumption, two wiring schemes are used: serial (tee) and parallel or collector.

Sequential

Advantages:

  • this system is simpler, fewer pipes are required for its installation;
  • pipes don’t get clogged as much because there are fewer corners and transitions;
  • Requires less water pressure to operate than other systems.

Flaws:

  • worse water distribution to consumers. If, for example, someone is taking a shower and someone else turns on the cold water in the kitchen, then the person in the shower has a chance of getting a portion of very hot water;
  • there is a large difference in pressure between the initial and final points of water consumption, and the greater the distance between them, the greater it is.

Sequential water consumption scheme

As can be seen in the diagram, water is supplied to consumers using taps - tees, which is why this scheme is also called a tee. In this case, water consumers find themselves in an unequal position, since the greatest pressure will be at the very beginning, and the least at the end.

Parallel

An undeniable advantage is the best water distribution at all points: at any point of water distribution, the pressure and flow of water are the same.

Flaws:

  • a larger number of pipes for laying such a water distribution scheme. At the same time, not only does the installation of such a water supply system become more complicated, but the material costs for its installation also increase;
  • installation of such a pipeline is generally possible only when laying a new water supply system, since it requires a large number of hidden installation works.

Collector water consumption scheme

As can be seen from the figure, with such a water supply network scheme, water is distributed through the pipes using special devices - collectors connected to hot and cold water pipes. At the same time, all water consumers find themselves in equal conditions, receiving the same pressure and water flow.

If the house has a large, extensive water supply network, then you can combine two types of pipe distribution. In this case, you can combine all the advantages of the two water supply schemes and remove all the disadvantages.

Pipe types

In order to install plumbing in a private home, there are many types of pipes. Moreover, each type of pipe has its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • Metal pipes, the main advantage of such pipes is their ability to withstand high pressure, but at the same time they rust, as a result of which sediment forms on the walls, which narrows the conditional passage in the pipe. When installing pipes, either welding or labor-intensive threaded connections are required.
  • Metal-plastic pipes are aluminum pipes coated with plastic inside and out. The advantage of such pipes is that they do not rust and are not very labor-intensive to install, but the disadvantage is that the connecting parts for such pipes are relatively expensive.
  • Polypropylene - these pipes consist of polypropylene with an internal metal or fiberglass shell. The advantage of such a pipeline is the relative cheapness of installation, but the disadvantage is the need to purchase a special soldering iron for installing pipes.

Soldering polypropylene pipes

As can be seen from the figure, the pipe and the fitting are heated simultaneously and then connected to each other. Also, for greater convenience, when installing the soldering iron, three nozzles of different diameters are installed at once.

When soldering polypropylene pipes, care must be taken not to narrow the cross-section of the pipeline. This can happen if the pipe overheats too much.

  • Polyethylene - such pipes are easy to install and do not rust, but they cannot withstand high pressure and are not suitable for passing hot water.
  • PVC pipes, the main advantage of such pipes is their low cost. However, they cannot withstand high pressure and are not suitable for hot water.

Do-it-yourself plumbing installation

In order to make a water supply system with your own hands, you must first decide on its layout: what it will be like, what is necessary for its arrangement. All conditions are taken into account. If, for example, the central water supply system provides water of the required quality and quantity, then there is no point in spending extra money on drilling a well or digging a well. This will determine how much it will cost to bring water into the house. If the water analysis is positive, then you don’t have to spend money on water treatment and water purification equipment.

When all the conditions for arranging the water supply system have been previously taken into account, work can begin. To do this, you need to sketch out a small water supply project: points of water consumption and water intake are marked on the layout of the rooms of the house. Then these points are connected with lines - pipes. Determine places for installing additional equipment along the pipe path: filters, water storage tanks, devices for regulating pressure in the network, water heaters. Based on the design results, a list of all necessary equipment is compiled: pipes and fittings. After purchasing everything you need, you can begin the installation itself.

When installing a water supply system, installation is divided into two stages. At the first stage, the water supply system itself is installed and branches are made to the points of water consumption. After this, you need to carry out work to prepare for the second stage - installation of equipment. For example, laying tiles in the bathroom or making a floor screed for a pumping station.

When installing a pipeline, all threaded connections should not be placed in hard-to-reach places or, especially, hidden under plaster or tiles. Sooner or later, water may begin to seep in there, and it will be impossible to eliminate the leak without damaging the plaster.

After all work has been completed, installation of the equipment can begin. Once everything is installed, you can test the plumbing. To do this, the system is supplied with pressure slightly higher than that at which it will operate. This can be done by tightening the pressure regulator or relay at the pumping station. In this case, you must then remember to return it to its original state. If there is no plunger in the system, you need to open the taps and bleed the air from the pipes. If leaks are detected in the pipeline, they must be repaired immediately. Then, during operation, a repeated inspection is carried out; if there are no leaks, then everything was done correctly, and you can use water from a self-made water supply.

In contact with

Last year there was a need to change the water supply in a private house. The house was over thirty years old and there was practically no water pressure anymore - the pipes were clogged. Having become familiar with the price range for such work, we came to the conclusion that “they are not making holy pots,” and began preparations for replacing the water supply system.

The first, most important and necessary activity is drawing up a diagram with a detailed indication of all connected water consumers, necessary branches, taps, collectors, etc. Believe me, the plan is as necessary as the tightness of joints or the quality of materials. It is not for nothing that drawing up a water supply plan in all reputable construction offices is a separate line and costs a lot. A well-drafted plan will save you from unnecessary expenses on purchasing unnecessary materials, extra footage of pipes and will give you an approximate idea of the preliminary cost of the work as a whole.

Since it was decided to change the water supply system completely from the main to the last point, the question arose about the choice of material. I will dwell in more detail on this important point. Modern plumbing is mainly made from the following materials: plastic, metal-plastic and metal. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. Metal, for example, has great strength and a long service life, but to assemble the system you cannot do without welding; the disadvantage is the relatively high price per linear meter of pipe. Plastic, or PVC pipes, are lightweight, durable, and relatively inexpensive. The disadvantages are that they can withstand only one freezing and require special equipment for installation (soldering iron, etc.). Metal-plastic pipes are flexible, lightweight, durable, resistant to soil freezing and very easy to install. Despite the higher cost than PVC pipes, we decided to go with them.

Next came the excavation work. The photo shows a dug trench that was used to lay pipes to the house. The depth of the trench was chosen according to the depth of the old pipe, with a slight rise towards the house. The insertion point into the main line was cleaned, and a clamp of the required diameter with an internal thread for the required pipe diameter (1 ¼ inches) was purchased. An emergency valve is installed on the clamp. Further according to the diagram: main line - 1-inch pipe - hole in which the yard tap is installed (with the possibility of removal for the winter). Here in the pit: the main shut-off valve, a coarse filter, a water flow meter, and a valve that shuts off the water supply directly to the house, with a transition to a pipe diameter of ¾ inches.

Next, the water enters the house (kitchen) and at the entrance is divided by a cross (pictured) into three directions. Sink (cold), gas boiler water circuit (hot) and bathroom (all bathroom consumers, cold) After passing through the gas boiler circuit heater, the already heated hot water is supplied to the bathroom. The pipes run parallel, passing the entire length of the hallway of the house (5 meters). It turned out that the hot water, having traveled all the way, had time to cool down and to save gas consumption, the pipe had to be insulated all the way to the bathroom faucet, wrapping it with insulation intended for installation under laminate flooring.
That's practically all. There are three consumers in the bathroom: an automatic machine, a toilet cistern and a bathroom faucet - it was decided to make it common for the sink (pictured). Naturally, when laying the water supply system, the appropriate taps were made, the necessary taps were installed, etc.

Now briefly about materials and installation. It is advisable to buy fittings and taps in good stores, and not on the market - there is a very high probability that they will sell you low-quality silumin instead of bronze. Installation is very simple: a hacksaw, a knife, two wrenches and straight hands - that's all you need. I do not go into detail about connecting pipes, putting on fittings, etc. - everything is elementary simple, in any store they will tell you and show you, there is a lot of information on this issue. Try it, dare and you will definitely succeed!
