A bedspread made of rags. DIY Quilt: Ideas and Step-by-Step Instructions

Remember we wrote about hygge style? How did you not read? Be sure to read and get inspired by this lifestyle and the philosophy of organizing a Scandinavian interior. The philosophy is very simple: coziness, comfort, nothing superfluous, nothing that could irritate, distract or tire.

Patchwork bedspread in the interior

Maximum of soft and comfortable things, a lot of textiles, homely, natural materials. The house is calm and safe, friends gather here, it’s not boring to be here yourself, curled up in your favorite handmade blanket and immersed in dreams. By the way, about handmade and bedspread. We offer to bring this luxurious picture to life and create a patchwork patchwork quilt with your own hands.

What materials are needed for a patchwork bedspread?

Well, let's start by defining the concept of patchwork. This is a technique that allows you to sew a whole blanket, or rug, or even a bag, clothing, stole, from many different small scraps. Such products are not only warm and therefore practical, but very stylish and authentic, which means they can decorate the interior. We will sew a blanket. What we need:

  • remnants of various fabrics (it is desirable that they be of approximately the same quality, or at least the same thickness);
  • ruler, pencil;
  • scissors;
  • fleece;
  • fabric for the wrong side (denim can be used);
  • thread, needle or sewing machine;
  • for a more complex option you will need a diagram.

Technique for creating a bedspread from scraps

For starters, you can try sewing DIY patchwork blanket from squares. Then you don’t have to think about the pattern and sewing the bedspread will be easier.

You need to cut out many identical squares from the scraps - use a pencil and ruler so as not to make mistakes in the sizes.

If you have a sewing machine, the process will go much faster. Sew the squares in rows, and then sew the rows themselves. When the fabric is ready, it needs to be ironed from the inside to straighten the seams.

Pattern of a patchwork bedspread

Then you need to measure the item to cut the appropriate fleece fabric. Now place the blanket face up on the fleece.

The next step is to also cut out a fabric from denim or any other fabric - this will be the inside of the blanket. Next, lay the denim right side down on the fleece and blanket stack.

Your stack can be basted a little and then topstitched. Leave a hole in one of the corners so that the blanket can be turned inside out. If you did everything correctly, you will have denim on one side, a quilt front on the other, and fleece on the inside. The hole must be sewn up with hidden seams and the finished product must be ironed again.

Patchwork quilt pattern

If you want to increase the size of the blanket, then at the assembly stage you can lay plain strips of fabric between the squares. Now you have a finished patchwork quilt.

DIY patchwork blanket: using patterns

A more complex pattern will require precision cutting and a diamond eye. First, study your stock of scraps: what material is plentiful, what is less, and what is generally in short supply. Next, you can come up with a diagram yourself by drawing it on a sheet of paper with paints or pencils, or take ready-made templates.

Remember that it is most convenient to sew the flaps in blocks, and then sew these blocks together. Don't forget to leave seam allowances, otherwise you will end up with a product that is half the size you expect.

Patchwork style: bedspread in different techniques

More precisely, the execution technique remains the same, but the products will differ from each other in appearance.

In ancient times there was not such a variety of stores as there are now. And based on this, there were no blankets for sale either. We had to sew them ourselves. Therefore, from early childhood, all girls were taught this skill.

At the moment, anyone can go and buy the blanket they need. But many people want something special, so they sew such products with their own hands.

In this article we will talk about patchwork. What it is? Patchwork is patchwork sewing, that is, a whole product is made from scraps. Based on this technique can be done pillow, blanket, napkin, bedspread. But not everyone has tried to sew a patchwork product with their own hands. But from scraps you can sew not only beautiful blankets and rugs for the bed. Utilitarian handicraft allows you to create upholstery and covers for sofas, armchairs and chairs from the remains of furniture fabric using the pizza technique.

We will learn to sew a blanket and bedspread from scraps. But how to make a patchwork quilt with your own hands correctly and where to start? Let's figure it out.

DIY patchwork quilt master class for beginners

patchwork quilt sewn from scraps. Pieces of fabric can be found in every home and every housewife. But it’s better not to take easily torn pieces, such a blanket will quickly become unusable. To sew a product from scraps, it will take a lot of time and patience, since this work is very painstaking. The blanket can be sewn from stripes, squares, and diamonds. There are a lot of options and patterns for patchwork sewing.

Before you start sew such a product, you need to prepare a place to work so that you are comfortable. To do this you need a free table. There should be a sewing machine and a table lamp on it.

Patchwork blanket sewing (pattern)

To sew a product from scraps you will need:

  • Textile;
  • Sewing machine;
  • Scissors;
  • A small piece of soap or chalk;
  • Iron;
  • Cardboard and pencil;
  • Threads of different colors;
  • Pins and needles;
  • Centimeter;
  • Stuffing material: synthetic padding or cotton wool.

Scheme for deducting the number of squares. Let's figure out how to calculate how many squares are needed to sew a blanket.

To find out exactly how many squares you need, you need to divide the width of the blanket by the side of the square, and then divide the length of the blanket to the side of the square. If you get an even answer, then it must be reduced by one, since we need odd numbers. The resulting results must be multiplied by each other. As a result, you will receive an answer.

Let's give an example. Let's say that the blanket is 220 by 240 centimeters. And the squares from which you will sew the product will be 10 by 10. All that remains is to make the calculation: 220/10=22, 240/10=24. We take odd answers and multiply by each other: 21*23=483.

This means that for the entire product we will need 483 squares with a side of ten centimeters.

Blanket made from denim scraps

Turns out, the bedspread can be sewn and from old denim clothes!

The technique of sewing from pieces of fabric is called patchwork and is recognized as one of the types of decorative and applied art. It is no longer considered a purely utilitarian trend, when the poorer sections of society used waste material to make a patchwork quilt with their own hands or other necessary household items. Patchwork has turned into an art - it is used to make bedding and kitchen utensils, curtains, branded clothing and even colorful panels.

Quilting or patchwork

The technique of making things from scraps can be called quilting. Beginning craftswomen cannot always figure out how it differs from patchwork.

Although the techniques are similar, there are differences. Patchwork is a narrow concept; it implies patchwork sewing itself. Quilting literally translated from English means “stitching” (stitching). It combines two or more techniques, including embroidery. The products are voluminous thanks to the stitching. So a blanket sewn from pieces of fabric with your own hands, even the simplest one, is still made using the quilting technique, which includes patchwork.

You can sew anything from scraps of fabric, for example, extremely practical things, or realize your wildest ideas, letting your imagination fly free. One of the patchwork techniques is called “crazy” (“crazy”), however, it is too complicated for beginning craftswomen.

Sewing from scraps with your own hands is not easy. The work requires time, perseverance and accuracy.

Accessories and tools for needlework

Patchwork requires a certain set of tools. Below is a comprehensive list, there may be something you don't need:

Making patterns

It only seems so - we randomly cut pieces of fabric and sew anything from the scraps with our own hands. Patterns in patchwork play the same role as a pattern in creating clothes. It is with their production that work on the product begins.

The same templates can be used repeatedly, so to create them, use durable material, preferably transparent plastic, through which you can see the fabric pattern. First, the desired element is drawn (square, rhombus, triangle), then a seam allowance is added and a second contour is drawn.

The finished template looks like a frame. The details of the future product are cut out along its outer contour, and stitched along the inner contour.

Selection and preparation of fabric

It is not necessary to use a special patchwork fabric for needlework - any fabric you like will do. Perhaps the necessary materials can be found at home - pieces left over from sewing clothes or old, but not dilapidated things. Each fabric its features:

Synthetic padding or batting is used as a gasket (middle layer).

Any fabric need to be prepared before cutting, otherwise during operation the product may fade, shrink, or warp:

  1. Old items are ripped open, all seams are cut off, and the hem on new fabric is cut off.
  2. The next stage is washing. If this is not a problem with cotton and denim, then wool and silk are laid out in one layer on a wet sheet or towel, rolled into a roll and left for 2-3 hours.
  3. It is advisable to starch thin material.
  4. The damp fabric is ironed from the inside out along the grain thread. It is better to use an iron with a steam generator.

Rules for creating products from scraps

Patchwork is a rather complex art. Here you can’t “take it and do it.” You need to plan everything clearly, follow the sequence of actions and not break the rules. Interestingly, it is better to start with making large things. Sewing a bedspread is much easier than, say, an oven mitt, and the work will take the same amount of time.

Idea and sketch

There are patchwork kits on sale, consisting of a minimal set of tools, pieces of fabric, ready-made patterns and detailed instructions. But they are expensive, and coming up with a pattern yourself is much more interesting. If you don’t use ready-made kits, you can get an exclusive item while simultaneously relieving your house of unnecessary scraps and old clothes.

There are many techniques patchwork, for example:

  • with simple blocks - English Park, Quick Squares, Butter Dish;
  • sewing according to a pattern - Solomon's Riddle;
  • based on Monkey's tail, Russian square;
  • crazy;
  • blooper or yo-yo.

You can come up with ideas yourself, look at them while working on the Internet or with photographs. The easiest way to make a blanket from scraps is to make it yourself. In addition, it will be useful in the household, will amaze others, and the craftswoman will be able to understand whether it is worth doing patchwork or whether it is better to switch to something else.

First you need to create a sketch. A color wheel can help with color selection. At first, it is better to choose a simple pattern of squares and use fabrics of the same texture in several prints. It is best to cut out one block of scraps, lay them out on a white sheet and check that the colors match harmoniously.

Then a diagram is drawn on which the shape and dimensions of the parts will be indicated, and the numbers assigned to each group of patches will be indicated. Based on this, the number of parts is calculated.

Correct cut

It will be easiest for beginning craftswomen to sew a patchwork quilt from elements that are the same in shape and size - squares, rectangles, triangles. In order for the product to look neat, all fragments must be equal in size. This is what templates are for.

The pattern is applied to the fabric, the boundaries are outlined with chalk or soap. You need to cut the part along the outer edge and sew along the inner edge.

The amount of seam allowance depends on the type of fabric - the denser it is (fine wool, jeans) or more complex in the cut (silk), the larger the indentation is needed. Drape and thick wool are cut immediately along the inner edge of the template. If you sew the parts together, you will end up with a thickening that can spoil the appearance of the finished product. This fabric is stitched end-to-end in a zigzag pattern, but it is better to first “plant” the fragments on pieces of non-woven fabric and stitch the edges.

When cutting, the direction of the grain thread must be taken into account - for squares it should be parallel to one of the sides, for triangles it should be perpendicular to the base. If you neglect this requirement, the finished product will warp.

Assembly sequence

The assembly of complex products must be carried out as follows: first, small parts are sewn on, then large ones. This will preserve the pattern and avoid distortions and deformation.

Most crafts using the patchwork technique consist of blocks. For example, in a blanket made of squares or triangles, the fragments are first sewn together in stripes, and then they are combined into a large product.

Patch to patch is basted along the inner edge of the marking with threads or fastened with pins. The pieces are then sewn together by machine. After this, the allowances are ironed. Only then are the blocks sewn into a single fabric.

Ironing the product

Ironing the sewn fragments is the most important stage of assembly., neglecting it means ruining the product:

  • iron preferably on the front side;
  • the seam is ironed under a fragment of dark color;
  • all allowances of one block are smoothed in one direction, the next - in the opposite direction;
  • to avoid distortions, the strips are ironed lengthwise;
  • For problematic fabrics, use a steamer.

A hot iron will damage the padding polyester. It is ironed at low temperature using a steam generator or a damp cloth.

Quilting Basics

The final stage when sewing bulky items that require lining and insulation is stitching. It firmly connects the three layers of the product, does not allow it to warp during washing or cleaning, or the batting or padding polyester to get lost. Stitch patterns can be very complex and made with multi-colored threads.

The lining and insulation are cut out, if possible, from a single piece of fabric, adding about 5 cm from each edge to the size of the front fabric. First, the top and inside parts are quilted, then connected to the back. This is done in order to avoid deformation of the finished product.

You can quilt by machine or by hand in this sequence:

  • smooth the fabric with your hands from the middle to the edges on a flat surface;
  • the layers are fastened with pins;
  • sew the corners of the canvases;
  • always quilt from the middle to the periphery;
  • The edge of the blanket is edged with fabric or ribbon.

The simplest master class

To make your first quilting item, you can use a master class with step-by-step instructions. The easiest way to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands is using the quick squares technique. The finished product will have a size of 220x200 cm, repeat - 20x20 cm, material - chintz.

  1. We do the calculations. We will need 110 squares, add 0.5 cm to the seams on each side. Each piece will have a size of 21X21 cm. Naturally, the canvas is not dimensionless. Chintz is produced in different widths, the most convenient to use is 150 cm. You will need 16 strips 21 cm long, 7 squares can be cut from each (2 will remain extra).
  2. For convenience and less fabric consumption, we will use 4 different prints - 4 stripes each 84 cm long. Taking into account shrinkage, we need to take more material.
  3. Wash, starch and iron the fabric.
  4. Using a template, mark the material and cut along the outer edge.
  5. We lay out the parts on a white sheet and come up with a sequence for connecting them into a pattern.
  6. We sweep the squares exactly according to the internal markings and sew them on a machine.
  7. Iron the seams.
  8. We assemble the front part of the blanket by sewing the blocks together.
  9. Remove the basting and iron it.
  10. We cut out insulation from batting, and from calico - the purl is tight. On each side we leave an allowance of 3-5 cm.
  11. We connect the batting and the patchwork fabric, sew the corners, baste, starting from the middle.
  12. If your machine does not have a quilting foot, use a zigzag stitch. The seams can be placed on top of or near the joints of the squares. We sew in the direction from the middle of the blanket to the edges.
  13. Separately fasten the lining.
  14. We process the edge of the blanket. You can use one of the fabrics used or a contrasting tape. Its width should be equal to twice the seam allowance of the backing fabric and interfacing plus 1 cm.
  15. We fix the corners of the product manually or with a machine.

The blanket is ready!

Sewing a patchwork quilt is, without a doubt, more difficult than an ordinary one. But in this regard, it is more valued when creating home comfort. Looking at such a beautiful product, everyone will be able to appreciate the painstaking work of the needlewoman who worked on its creation.

The easiest patchwork quilt to make for a beginning needlewoman is a quilt made from squares.

To sew a quilt using squares, you should know the following:

  1. When the square has a side of more than 5 cm, then cutting is carried out along the grain thread.
  2. The square blanks are sewn into long strips in accordance with the prepared pattern or scattered.
  3. The rectangles are sewn together with their short sides.
  4. The sewing technique is as follows: the first square is placed with the front part facing the second, then both are stitched along the allowance line. The rib is ironed and ironed to the side of the square made of darker fabric.
  5. After sewing the third square, it is folded with the front side facing the second and done the same as in the previous paragraph.
  6. The squares are stitched one after another, resulting in stripes. They are stitched along the seam allowance line and ironed in one direction.

How to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands

In order to start sewing a patchwork quilt, you need to stock up on the following tools: needles, pins, threads, scissors or a roller knife, an iron for smoothing seams, a sewing machine, knitting needles or crochet (when leftover threads are used to knit the patches), fabric pieces or special kits for creating blocks.

On a note! A patchwork quilt can also be made from old items, stretchers, after washing them first. The material used must be of good quality, that is, not dilapidated and non-fading.

How to combine colors and textures for a quilt?

The shreds should be the same in thickness.
When choosing color shades, you should refer to the color wheel. The best combination will be contrasting colors (for example, blue and yellow), or a single color scheme (for example, different shades of blue in one block).

We invite you to watch a video with a training master class on sewing a patchwork quilt with your own hands.

Sewing the front part

The simplest technique in patchwork needlework is the method based on the use of fabric squares.

Technique "Quick squares"

Laying out a mosaic of squares is a simple technology; all you need is the right selection of fabric. Squares of the same size are cut out from fabric pieces. In order for the blocks to be formed, you need to sort them in accordance with the color scheme, pattern, texture.

Creating such a bedspread will not take much time, especially if there is no need to follow the sewing pattern and the sequence of the patches. We sew the squares into ribbons using the technology described above, and connect the ribbons together.

"Chess"

The name of the technique speaks for itself: the meaning of the method is to alternate squares of two different colors, which resembles a chessboard, resulting in an interesting pattern. It would be best to use fabrics that have the same pattern, but different shades. Also, the blanket will turn out to be original if you alternate flaps with a striped pattern, placing them in a horizontal and vertical position.

Making such a blanket from scraps is simple, and this method can be implemented by any novice needlewoman. You just need to be careful in choosing the material and carefully connect the squares in a chess plot.

"Watercolor"

We sew such a patchwork quilt using squares arranged in a specific sequence (according to a pattern), the result of which is the creation of a floral pattern. With the right selection of colors and patterns, such a patchwork quilt will become a wonderful piece of furniture. Skilled craftsmen create bedspreads using this method that resemble paintings depicting flowers, sea and natural landscapes.
Below we offer you options for ready-made quilt patterns.

"Diamond"

This technique is an intricate arrangement of a square within a square. Often this method is used as an element in ancient technology called “Russian square” or “Pineapple”. Sewing this quilt is simple and easy.

  1. Take two pieces of fabric and cut out patches in the shape of squares: 2 from one, and 1 from the second.
  2. Two identical squares are cut along a diagonal line into two parts, resulting in isosceles triangles.
  3. The largest side of these four triangles is applied to each of the four sides of the square and sewn.
  4. Please note that the seam allowance is 0.5 - 0.75 millimeters.

It is worth noting that one blanket can easily be made of three types of shapes: square, triangle and stripes.

Quilt Patterns

Assembling the blanket

Once the patchwork base of the quilt is ready, we move on to the assembly stage. In order not to take up a lot of surrounding space when working, it will be more convenient to first divide the blanket into blocks and sew it together in parts. The seams are sewn using the “in-seam” stitch, and then over the “zigzag” butt stitch.

Initially, you need to quilt all the blocks separately (together with padding polyester filler and lining) leaving large allowances (at least 10 cm). The patchwork top should have a smaller size than the lining and padding polyester.

Once you have finished laying out the quilt on the floor (right side facing the floor), the edges should be secured to the floor surface with tape to prevent the quilt from moving. First you need to stitch the patchwork top onto the blocks, then carefully straighten the padding polyester.

There is no need to sew pieces of padding polyester together. Just overlap the edges and then pin them with a pin. After joining the top parts, the lining is sewn together using a blind stitch.

With this assembly, the stitch will look beautiful and neat, and your painstaking work will be appreciated.

Edge processing

To process the edge of the blanket, the selected fabric must be cut into strips 10 cm wide. The length of the sewn strips corresponds to the size of the blanket along its perimeter.

Fold the fabric inside out and iron it. We sew the fabric, bend the edging so that angles of 90°C are formed. When the ribbon is sewn to one side, you need to bend it, wrap it and sew it on, using a blind stitch by hand. Next, work the corners from the wrong side. All! Your DIY quilt is ready!

How to sew a patchwork quilt using the patchwork technique

A patchwork blanket is created using cotton, calico, calico, satin, linen or silk.

Patchwork: different types

There are several ways to sew patchwork quilts. Let's consider the most popular and interesting options.

  1. Using the standard patchwork technique, it is assumed that the needlewoman will step by step sew together individual textile fragments that have geometric shapes. This technology is the simplest that any beginner can handle.
  2. The quilting technique differs from the traditional one in that each piece is sewn together with other different types of stitches using a sewing machine. Often, when creating a blanket, the fabric is supplemented with lining (batting or other reinforcing material).
  3. Crazy patchwork is quite unusual. The blanket is created like this: fragments of different sizes and shapes are sewn together. Moreover, the elements are connected with any stitches, complemented with beads, bright buttons, beads and other decorative elements.
  4. Japanese technique. It uses silk fabrics with geometric patterns and ornaments. These are sophisticated and eye-catching blankets that perfectly complement the interior.
  5. Making a blanket in the knitted patchwork style with your own hands is a very interesting job. All fragments are knitted separately and then sewn on using thick threads, resulting in a complete product. There is also a technique by which motifs are connected in the process of creating a blanket.

How to make a quilt from old jeans

Among the things that are a pity to throw away, there are often worn denim trousers, or even several. If you have the material and a lot of patience, then you can try to work on creating an original denim patchwork quilt.

First, you need to cut out squares of the same size from jeans. Then sew them to each other randomly.

On a note! When sewing, you can use colored fabric inserts. In this case, it is better to work without a special scheme. Then the result will be interesting and non-standard.

In this case, you should take into account the designers’ recommendation - the use of 3 primary colors in the product. If denim patches are included in the same color scheme, then it is better to combine them with fabrics of other colors. In the case when denim patches have a wide variety of colors and textures, then the use of other fabric inserts will be unnecessary.

It would be original to use patches with pockets, because they are very convenient and practical. You can put various little things in them that are convenient to keep at hand.

Sew a patchwork quilt from strips

Interesting results can be obtained by using stripes rather than squares for the quilt. From them you can build a rainbow row, patterns in the form of parquet or a square.

The strips are cut so that they have the same width. Also pay attention to the direction in which the grain is placed (taking into account seam allowances).

It is better to sew strips using a fabric base. A strip is placed on the surface of the fabric (equal to the size of the blanket or more) so that its front side is directed upward. The second strip is placed on top of the first with the front part facing it, and both of them are attached to the base. The following strips are sewn in the same way.

On a note! Stripes distributed diagonally look great. They are sewn together on a fabric base from the center, where the first strip is installed. The rest are sewn to it on both sides.

Sewing of the cut and laid out strips is carried out on the front side of the fabric base. Thus, its entire part is filled. Then you need to put damp gauze (or other material) on top, and cut off the excess fabric.

So, we have told you about the different ways to sew a quilt with your own hands. This is not difficult, but quite painstaking work. However, the result is worth the time and effort. A patchwork quilt will decorate the interior of any room and will become a pleasant and memorable gift, reminiscent of your love and care.

Even a beginner can sew a patchwork blanket from squares. A patchwork blanket is a beautiful, colorful and artistically competent home textile. It is not sewn so quickly, and for beginners it may take much more time, but such sewing can be the first truly high-quality thing in the house that you have made with your own hands.

DIY patchwork bedspread

Review more than one master class to decide not only what your product will look like (you can also see this in the photo gallery), but whether you, as a beginner, can handle all this technology. A detailed master class, of course, simplifies the work, but do not take on a difficult task right away. The first sewing should be a pleasure, but wading through the jungle of unfamiliar techniques can discourage you from further trying your hand at patchwork.

Any high-quality handicraft not only decorates the room, but also brings an atmosphere of comfort, warmth and natural brightness to the interior

Where does tailoring begin? Follow the instructions:

  • Determine the size of the bedspread;
  • Choose a color scheme that will match the interior style of the room where the product is intended;
  • Prepare the fabric: strips, pieces, shreds, squares;
  • Prepare the fabric that will become the wrong side of the product;
  • The tools you will need are: scissors, needles/pins, thread, sewing machine, pencil and square ruler (but you can also use a square template).

Let's say you are making a product out of squares. Why from squares? This will definitely be easier for a beginner to do - for beginners, cutting different shapes with their own hands and then connecting them in a pattern is a real test.

You can choose any pattern for the bedspread that you can

Of course, if there is a photo or video of a master class, view it in detail. But even if you only have diagrams in front of you, you can start sewing with them.

An important point: before you start preparing squares, the fabric should be prepared for work. Just soak it for ten minutes in hot water, and then just rinse it in clean warm water.

If we are to be completely consistent, it would be nice to show real class and starch the fabric. It’s worth doing this - it will be easier to work with the material. And, of course, iron the fabric thoroughly.

How to sew a patchwork bedspread

A small master class on how to make quick squares from fabric.

Just four steps:

  • Take two different pieces of fabric and cut two equal strips from them;
  • Fold them with the wrong side and sew, secure the sewing by carefully smoothing the seam;
  • Now measure the width of the resulting product, and from the third piece of fabric, cut out the same strip (of the same width);
  • You need to fold it with the resulting part right side out, and make seams on both sides.

As a result, you should end up with a kind of double-sided sleeve. Place this canvas on the table and cut out squares from it using a template or a special ruler.

In order to cut the squares correctly, it is important to use a template or ruler

It’s difficult to come up with a simpler scheme than this; any beginner will repeat this master class. This will be followed by the stage of connecting the squares. From the details you can get whatever patterns you want - simple geometric, fantasy, snakes, and mosaics. For the first time, you can lay out a simple ornament to make it easier to handle and you won’t get confused about what you are going to sew.

When you have decided on the pattern, the squares can be sewn together. First comes the sewing of the longitudinal stripes, after which you must iron the seams. Then we sew the resulting strips into one fabric. And again the next stage is careful ironing. After this, you will see that the front side is finished.

How to assemble a block from scraps (video)

Sew a patchwork bedspread: the final part

The front side is not the whole product. Next, you must sew the front part to the back with your own hands. Chintz is an excellent backing fabric. Batiste can also be made inside out.

  • Place the piece of fabric for the backing face down on the table;
  • Place padding polyester on top of the backing fabric if your bedspread has the function of a blanket (otherwise padding polyester is not needed);
  • The next layer is the front side, that same patchwork of squares;
  • Either baste it yourself, or you just need to pin the entire product together and quilt it on a sewing machine.

In order for the bedspread to have a shape, it is necessary to use a sealing material in the form of padding polyester.

How to quilt an item correctly? The easiest way to do this is along the borders of the squares, but if you envision some kind of pattern, you can quilt along the pattern. True, for beginners this is a rather difficult task (a separate master class on stitching will help you in this case).

The last stage is edging. This is easy to do: take a strip of fabric approximately 8 cm wide, and the length should be slightly longer than one side of the product. The fabric needs to be folded in half, applied to the front side of the item and sewn. Fold the excess edges of the edging to the wrong side of the item, fold the edging onto the wrong side of the product and stitch from the front side. The line will go across the canvas. The other sides of the item are edged in the same way.

Having comprehended the basic basics of this skill, you can move on to more complex ornaments.

This is the simplest master class; such a product doesn’t really need diagrams. The main thing is not to overdo it with the patchwork pattern.

This blanket can be used to decorate a bed, sofa, and sometimes it is also used as a tablecloth. Well, what if you decide to make a patchwork product for a children's bed? Maybe this is where you should take your first step in patchwork?

To decorate a baby’s bed using patchwork technology, you need to prepare almost the same as for the previous work.

Fairy-tale colors are the main distinguishing feature of children's interior items

You will need:

  • Fabric (4 types);
  • Fleece;
  • Sewing machine;
  • Needles;
  • Threads;
  • Scissors;
  • Ruler or templates.

You can sew a baby blanket from 48 squares. The side of one square is 8 cm. Don’t complicate your debut work, a patchwork quilt of 48 squares is easy to sew, and most importantly, everything will be clear, it’s difficult to get confused.

A colorful patchwork bedspread can become a bright piece of furniture in a child's room.

  • The resulting squares must be slowly sewn together and ironed very well;
  • Place the patchwork fabric on fleece, it will be the wrong side of the product;
  • Cut off all excess and round the corners;
  • Sew both fabrics along the edges, the indentation is 1 cm.

That's all, a cute DIY patchwork bedspread is ready! It will decorate a children's bed and will look great as a cover while walking in a stroller. You can sew it literally in a week, just don’t rush the sewing - all the squares should be even. Patchwork sewing cannot be rushed.

With your own hands, you can also sew a blanket for a child and a cover for a chair in a child’s room. A patchwork master knows how difficult it is to stop when the first product turns out successful, and as soon as you “get into gear,” you sew a lot, and in a more complex technique. Don’t be lazy to post a photo of your debut product on the Internet and inspire newcomers to their first feats.
