For many owners of houses and apartments, installing and connecting sockets seems like something complicated that simply must be done exclusively by a master. In truth, this is not the case and therefore this article will tell you how to install a socket block with your own hands.

What you need to know before you get started

These days there are a huge variety of materials from which a wall can be made. There are plasterboard walls, stone walls, brick walls, concrete walls. Different installation technologies are used for them, since each of them has its own specifics.

Note

This article outlines only how to install and connect the socket block, despite the fact that today we also have such a combination as a socket with a switch, but an article will be published about it some other time.

To install sockets, you need to know the dimensions of the socket blocks, and they are as follows:

  • The size of one outlet is 72 millimeters in width and the same in height;
  • The block size grid of 2 electrical points is 72 millimeters long and 142 millimeters wide;
  • The grid of block sizes of 3 electrical points is also 72 millimeters long and 212 millimeters wide;
  • The 4-part mesh is 284 millimeters wide and the same 72 millimeters high.

Safety during socket installation

The process of installing and connecting the outlet must be safe and quite aesthetic. Let's talk about the first one, professionals recommend installing sockets at a height of approximately forty centimeters from the floor, although most often people install them at a height of about a meter.

Children should not have any access to sockets, so it is worth installing sockets with a protective cover that a small child will certainly not be able to break into.

Prepare for installation

Before you start work, it is worth determining the place where you will place the outlet group. If this place is the kitchen, then the socket should be placed just above the countertop, thereby ensuring that the cord from any kitchen equipment will successfully reach the socket.

If you plan to place sockets in the living room, it is best to do this behind the TV, which will hide all the wires.

Speaking of the bathroom, it must be taken into account that the sockets must be located at least 0.6 meters from the bathroom and be waterproof.



Wall marking process

A critical stage that determines the quality of installation of sockets and their connection. In order to implement it, it is necessary to place sockets in the place where the socket boxes are installed; the number of sockets placed depends on how many sockets will be present in the block.

When doing this work, know that there should be exactly 72 centimeters between the central parts of the socket boxes. If you make an error in measurements, you guarantee that the socket cover will not fit.

Grooving

This process is not as difficult as it sounds. It includes creating nests for socket boxes. In this case, you need to have a hammer drill with the required attachment.

If you are going to place a block of sockets in a wall made of concrete or brick, then it is vital for you to drill the circles with a crown and then knock out the core with a chisel.

Installation of socket boxes

It is also not the most difficult step in installing sockets, since today the market offers plastic cups created for this procedure that connect to each other. So even the most ignorant person can handle it.

If the installation of socket boxes takes place in a concrete or brick building, then you need to cover the glasses with gypsum mortar.

If you are dealing with drywall, then know that carrying out the above procedure with sockets is simple, since they have paws created for this purpose, which are pressed on the sides to the sheet.

Electrical connection

After waiting until the substance has hardened, you need to start turning on the internal block of sockets to the 220V network. Several euro sockets can be connected to one electrical line at once, but keep in mind that this is done only when you know that you will not connect, say, an electric stove.

Safety precautions

Before starting work on installing the unit (and any other work related to electrical installation devices), it is imperative to turn off the circuit breaker to which this unit will be connected in the electrical panel. After turning off the desired machine, use an indicator screwdriver to make sure that there is no voltage. In residential premises of old buildings, where machines are not installed, it is necessary to remove the plugs.

Connecting the socket + switch unit

The “regular” installation location for such a modular product is in the corridor on the partition separating the bathroom and toilet. One panel contains switches for lighting fixtures in these rooms and a socket for electrical appliances that are constantly used in the bathroom. It is dangerous to use a product without moisture protection in a bathroom, so units without moisture protection are installed in the corridor.

To connect a unit with a two-button lighting switch in the bathroom and bathroom, you need to lay five wires from the electrical box to it.

  1. The grounding conductor in the diagram is shown in light green, the zero is blue. These two conductors go directly from the distribution box to the outlet.
  2. The phase is indicated in red. This conductor is connected to the socket, then with a jumper - to the common contact of the incoming phase of the switch.
  3. The remaining two wires are connected to two switched contacts. Through them, the phase is connected to the lighting fixtures when the keys are pressed. This circuit provides a constant phase, zero and grounding on the socket, and a phase on the lower contact of the switch keys (zero goes to the lighting fixture). On the upper contact, the phase appears when the keys are pressed.

Two twists of wires are made in the junction box. In the diagram they are indicated in beige and yellow. The switched phases are twisted from the switch to the phase conductors going to the lamps. The neutral and grounding conductor are taken in the distribution box from the contacts to which the socket in the block is connected.

Important! To change the order of operation of the keys, you need to swap the beige and yellow wires on the switch.

If you plan to install a single-key switch, beige or yellow conductors must be excluded from the circuit.

Using a three-key product requires the use of a 6-core cable. The sixth core of the cable is connected to the third switched contact from above along with the beige and yellow conductors.

Connection

If it is necessary to use a significant number of electrical appliances, a computer and a telephone, modular products are installed. The peculiarity of their installation is that all connections in them are made in parallel.

They are usually installed in the living room or kitchen. In the living room they traditionally hide behind the TV; for the kitchen, very interesting solutions have recently appeared with products recessed into furniture or into the countertop. Such models, hiding in the table, can be used in other rooms of the apartment.

How to connect sockets in a modular product?

Let's look at the operating diagram using the example of a block of three elements.

First, jumpers of not very long length are made from three wires and inserted into each socket box (in each seat) so that they do not interfere with the installation in the future.

Then you should disassemble all installation devices. The wires or cable coming from the junction box are stripped. The jumpers between the mounting boxes are also cleaned.

Advice! It is better to leave a small supply of cable coming from the junction box when stripping. In the future, you will have the opportunity to strip the wires again and make a new connection.

The first device is connected as a regular 220 volt electrical installation device. The device itself is installed level in the mounting box. Wires of the same color are connected in parallel. Then the second device is installed. Three wires are connected to the third. The reliability of the installation of all devices is checked, the common strip and front panels are mounted.

It is a socket block, a long narrow panel with several electrical outlets. Such groups can be installed in any room of the house. Installing socket blocks is not particularly difficult. However, of course, this operation should be performed with your own hands in strict compliance with all required technologies and rules.

Security measures

Before proceeding with the installation of the socket group, be sure to completely cut off the power supply to the apartment. You also need to choose the right place to install the block. So, for example, according to regulations, sockets in the house must be installed at least 60 cm from sinks, showers and gas pipelines.

SNiP does not provide any special requirements regarding the installation height of electrical points. But most often, socket blocks are mounted at a height of 30-40 cm or 90-100 cm from the floor.

What tools will you need?

To install a socket block in an apartment or house, you will need to prepare:

  • building level;
  • perforator;
  • screwdriver and wire cutters;
  • pencil and ruler for marking.

Block design features

Outlet groups installed in residential apartments and private houses consist of the following elements:

  • one common frame for all electrical points;
  • front panels;
  • housings with contacts.

The unit may also include several socket boxes. Of course, before proceeding with installation, the socket block must be disassembled. That is, separate the front panel from the frame and loosen the bolts on the contacts.

Marking

Having decided on the installation location, you can begin to actually install the sockets. First of all, you will need to make markings for the block. This procedure should be approached responsibly. Otherwise, the decorative cover of the group may not fall into place in the future.

The sockets for the electrical points of the block must be made in such a way that the distance between their centers is 72 mm. Of course, all grooves must be placed in the same horizontal or vertical plane, depending on the type of block. In order to achieve this, you should use a building level.

Wall chipping

Seats for block socket boxes in brick or concrete walls are made using a hammer drill with a special attachment. If you don’t have such a tool on your farm, you can do the chiselling using just a hammer and chisel. This procedure is performed approximately as follows:

  • first, the circles are scored with a crown;
  • knock out the core using a chisel;
  • Clean cement crumbs and dust from the nest.

It will, of course, be even easier to make holes in drywall than in concrete. In this case, a special crown is used for cutting. To insert the entire block, the jumpers between the nests cut out in concrete or drywall are removed.

Rules for fastening socket boxes

Socket boxes for socket blocks usually have a special design. They are plastic cups that are easily fastened together and have four holes for passing wires in a horizontal or vertical plane.

After installing the socket boxes, the grooves need to be walled up. For this you can use, for example, alabaster, putty or putty. Socket boxes are usually built into brick or concrete walls using gypsum mortar. Such elements are pressed onto the gypsum boards with special paws.

Connection diagrams

Socket blocks can be connected to the wiring:

  • sequentially;
  • parallel.

The first type of installation is called looping, the second - “star”.

Most often, do-it-yourself socket blocks are connected to the network in series. Technologically, the trailing method is considered somewhat simpler than the “star” method. However, using this connection method for blocks is allowed only if the sockets are not subsequently planned to be used for any very powerful household appliances.

Connection using the daisy chain method: step-by-step instructions

In this case, when installing the unit, the sockets are connected in series, like light bulbs on a garland. Actually, when using the loopback method, only the first electrical point is connected to the network. The remaining sockets are connected to its contacts.

This technology is used in most cases in old houses, that is, where there are no grounding wires. With this connection method, phase is connected to phase, and zero to zero. In this case, the connection is made as follows:

  • the phase of the main cable and the phase of the second socket are connected to the terminal of the first socket;
  • the same operation is performed with the neutral wire;
  • between the jumpers of the socket boxes, wires for the next sockets are passed and bent towards the terminals;
  • The wires are connected in series.

Thus, only one phase wire and one neutral wire will be connected to the last socket in the chain.

The looping method when installing a block of sockets can, of course, also be used in houses whose electrical network is supplemented with grounding. Installation in this case will have some nuances. The fact is that according to safety standards, it is impossible to interrupt the grounding wire during looping. In this case, it is installed using the branch method.

How to make a parallel connection

When using this technology, each socket of the block has its own phase and its own zero from the distribution box. That is, for example, in this case a cable with three phases and three zeros must be laid to a block of three electrical points. At the point where the conductors split in the box, when using this connection method, special metal crimp sleeves or terminal blocks are used.

The final stage of installation

After all the sockets are installed in the sockets and connected, they need to be leveled and secured with self-tapping screws. Next, you should check the operation of the mounted unit. To do this, you need to restore the power supply and use an indicator screwdriver to make sure that current is flowing to the sockets.

The work on installing the unit is completed by replacing the front panel. After this, they usually check the functionality of the group again, this time by connecting some electrical appliance.

When connecting the socket block, you should, among other things, follow the following recommendations:

  1. You should not leave too long ends of the wires when connecting them to socket boxes. The same applies to jumpers between electrical points in the block. It is believed that 12-15 cm of wire length will be quite sufficient for comfortable work.
  2. There is also no need to strip the wires for connection to the socket terminals for too long a length. The insulation at the ends of the cores should be removed no more than 0.8-10 mm.
  3. For the block jumpers, it is best to use wires of the same cross-section as the power cable.

It is best to purchase sockets with flat-spring contacts for installation in an apartment or country house. Such models are considered the most reliable and durable.

The branching of the grounding conductor should be carried out in the most proven way - crimping using a sleeve. This will allow you to maintain reliable contact along the entire length of the conductor.

You don't have to be an electrician to understand the process of installing sockets and switches. You need to know the simple rules and stages of work formulated in this article.

Safety conditions

It is important to do all work on installing sockets and switches, laying electrical communications only after the current in the network has been completely turned off. Turn off the automatic or traffic jams. And do not connect until the installation work is completed.

In order for the installed system to serve for a long time, it is important to choose the right wires and cables to be connected and lay them out correctly.

To do this, you should take into account:

  1. The power of all future energy-consuming appliances in an apartment or house. The performance of all devices is simply added together. It is necessary to know what the maximum power allocated by the network is.
  2. The choice of wire or cable type depends on the method of laying it: open or internal. It is necessary to decide which gasket is suitable for a specific electrical installation location.
  3. When laying wiring, do not lay the wires in bunches.

Important! Do-it-yourself installation of an electrical outlet, wiring and further installation of lighting is possible provided that a distribution board has already been installed and configured by a professional (electrician) at the site or in the apartment. Installing a wall socket

What you need:

  • socket
  • electrical wires (you should choose a cross-section of at least 2 sq. mm.)
  • socket box

So, after choosing a location for the outlet and turning off the current, we proceed directly to installation:

  • We place the distance from the floor 30–100 cm. Mark the installation location with a pencil. We calculate the distance from the distribution board to the designated location and determine how many meters of wiring are needed.
  • We install a special attachment in the drill chuck for drilling holes, corresponding to the type of wall and work with electrical fittings.

Tip: when there is no special attachment, and a single installation of the device is planned, use the following method: using the marked sketch of the socket (more precisely, the socket box), drill holes directly on the wall, and knock out the socket using a chisel and hammer.

  • Turn on the drill, if necessary, take an extension cord that is suitable in power for the electric drill you are using.
  • Put on protection (goggles and, if possible, a respirator) and drill the required hole in the wall.
  • Make a groove for the electrical wire. Use a grinder with a suitable disc or make a groove using a chisel and hammer.
  • Then the socket box (through which the wiring is pulled out) is installed and fixed in the finished hole.

Tip: measure the wiring generously, as a short length complicates the process of connecting to an outlet. And if in the future there is a need to replace an item, then the stock will make the work easier. Moreover, sometimes the wires burn out and, having a spare, the old ones are simply cut off. Without a supply, replacing a socket becomes much more difficult.

  • The wire laid in the groove and all chips and depressions in the area of ​​the socket box are covered with plaster (alabaster). We wait until it dries completely.

The first part of the work is completed.

Open the junction box. Then the electrical wire is connected using terminal clamps.

Important: the thicker the IPL, the more the cable costs. But you shouldn't skimp on wiring. A weak (cheap) wire can burn out, and replacing it will take an impressive amount of money and a lot of effort.

  1. Remove the cover from the outlet. Loosen or remove the screws that will clamp the wires. Insert the ends of the wire (after stripping them in advance) and fasten tightly with the screws.
  2. The screws of the installed legs are loosened and brought together to the body of the socket, which is inserted and secured (in the process of tightening the screws) into the socket box. The legs, spreading to the sides, are fixed to the socket and hold the structure in the wall.
  3. It is recommended to ensure that all wiring is connected.

Turn on the power and test the operation.

Along with standard power sockets and switches, new items and variations of these items have appeared on the market, differing significantly from their predecessors. But the basic principle of their performance has not changed.

Sockets

Each device consists of:

  • contacts;
  • bases (pads);
  • protective housing.

A contact is a key element through which current is transmitted from the cable to the contacts of the connected device.

Sockets have three wires: phase, neutral and ground. In the old ones there are only two of them - phase and zero.

The socket block is the base on which the contacts and the protective housing are held. When the socket is built-in, there are fastenings on the block for its installation in the socket box.

Two types of devices:

  1. Outdoor;
  2. Internal (in the wall).

The process for connecting them is the same. The only difference is in the way they are mounted on the wall. For devices with closed wiring, they take a special box into which the socket itself is inserted.

Socket boxes and their installation

These items are divided into two types:

  1. The first one is under plaster. A hole is drilled either in concrete or brick. A socket box is installed in this mounting hole on plaster or alabaster.
  2. If there is any wall covering, that is, plasterboard, or MDF panels, or plastic, and so on, trimmers built under the gypsum board are used. The diameter of the drilled holes is 68 mm.

Also, for a certain line of electrical fittings (sockets, switches), special trimmers are used, supplied directly by the manufacturer of the fittings. For example, the company ANAM - specialized trimmers.

Outdoor socket

It is used for open installation of electrical wires. Especially when wood trim is used indoors, it is the outdoor device that is safer. The openness of the wires makes it possible to quickly find possible problems and prevent a fire. The socket itself is simply screwed to the wall.

If mounting on wood, then:

  • be sure to use a special paronite gasket between the device and the material;
  • then fixing the wiring to the terminals and placing a decorative cover on the base of the device.

Internal socket

The installation process is a little different. For fixing, you will need a special box to install the device into. It is inserted into a hole in the wall and secured with screws.

When the wall is made of plasterboard, then:

  • choose special boxes with ears.

Boxes can be metal (old version) or plastic (modern standards). Their diameter may vary. When choosing, take this point into account, since modern sockets are most often sold under plastic.

  1. Unscrew the cover from the socket and install it in the box.
  2. The device is secured with screws of the spacer legs.
  3. Connect the wires.
  4. The structure is closed with a decorative overlay.

Important! Fixing the screws should be done diligently. If the contact is weak, the socket will become hot during use.

Then turn on the electricity and check the device.

If it is necessary to replace an element, the old socket is first dismantled.

After all dismantling steps have been completed, the installation of a new outlet begins.

First action. The wires that were removed earlier are reduced to the required length. It ranges from 15 to 20 cm. Then one and a half cm is cleared of insulation.

The panel house has the following features:

  2. Closed wiring. In a panel house (brick too) the concrete is strong and in order to carry out hidden wiring it is necessary to make grooves (preferably with a wall cutter). For internal wiring, it is important to lay the cable in a corrugated structure so that it is not subject to dynamic changes in the building (if the building sags or moves).

Important! Without corrugation, if the wall moves, the core may break, which will lead to a short circuit and non-functional condition of the socket and switches.

Laying internal wiring requires grooved walls. Electrical cables placed in a corrugated hose are laid in grooves. They are then placed in the mounting box.

It is important to know! Corrugated cables must be removed at least 10–12 cm.

The boxes are fixed with gypsum mortar. Then you need to give the solution time to dry and continue the process of connecting the electrical fittings.

With proper installation and with the correct cables (if the wiring is already there, done by a professional, and you just decided to mount the outlet yourself), if the electrician did everything correctly, then:

  1. A white cable is inserted into the socket on which “L” is written, which corresponds to the concept of phase and power.
  2. A blue cable is inserted into the socket marked with the letter “N”; it is called zero. And, accordingly, if there is a grounding loop, then a yellow or yellow-green cable “I_ _” is inserted into the grounded socket.

To connect a regular or two-key switch, you need to assemble a box. White (wire) from it to the letter L. If the box is twisted incorrectly, the colors may not match.

Important! In some lines, instead of white, brown is a phase. Then you need to do it according to the instructions included with the purchase.

Colors and meanings: blue is always 0. Yellow is earth. Sometimes there is a black cable instead of yellow.

Installing a double socket

Installing a double socket is a little different. The main difference between double sockets and single sockets is the ability to connect two electrical appliances at once. There are 2 types of doubles: prefabricated and stationary.

Installation of a double stationary type socket is carried out according to the scheme described above. You just need to connect the cables to different plates. If this condition is not met, there is a possibility of a short circuit when current is supplied.

The prefabricated type of double sockets is a little more difficult to install. In addition to the prepared tools, you will need to get a piece of additional wire. Its length should correspond to that connected to the undercut:

  • If the device has 3 wires (one ground and two power), it needs 3 additional ones. The latter should be pulled between the trimmers. The one that has the main wire output is connected via a pair of cables to the terminals - from the auxiliary and the main.

In other cutters the connection is standard. Installation of the triple socket and block is identical.

The peculiarity of power sockets is that they are almost always installed for an electric stove. They have their own characteristics and nuances:

  • such an outlet is connected to a separate line coming from the panel;
  • a necessary condition is the ability of the line to withstand a load of at least 40 amperes;

  1. A phase and a neutral are laid from the central panel to the distribution box.
  2. The junction box should also include: a pair of wires from the light bulb and three from the block in which two separate devices are combined.
  3. The phase core from the shield is connected to the wire going to the socket, which, in turn, is connected to the terminal on the switch using a jumper.
  4. The neutral wires of light bulbs and sockets are connected to the neutral of the central electrical network.
  5. The remaining two phase wires from the light source socket and the switch are twisted and insulated.
  6. If the unit is equipped with grounding, then you need to worry about its connection using an additional wire.

Thanks to this scheme, the socket, combined in one housing with the switch, will work independently of the switch, which, in turn, will perform its main functions of turning on and off the light bulb.
