How to make a homemade dart. DIY miniature dart

Moreover, it is a weapon that can not only be made from improvised means, but can also be used to hit a target at a distance. Of course, the best thing to do is to do it, but it is difficult to do in the wild.

Therefore, it’s best to remember the weapons of our ancestors; I bring to your attention an excerpt from a survival book about homemade darts. These are not the darts used to play darts, but real military weapons that are easy to make yourself.

The dart is designed to hit a “target” at a distance and by throwing it from the hand. Over the millennia of development of Human civilization, many varieties of ultra-light, throwing spears have been invented and tested in hunting and wars.

For a survivalist, the real result is important, and the sooner and simpler the better. Therefore, from all the variety of varieties of darts, we will choose one of the simplest and surprisingly accurate options.

For example, let’s cut a straight twig of wood: willow, walnut, maple, rowan, bird cherry... 120-140 centimeters long and with a butt thickness of one and a half to two centimeters. It is not necessary to sand the twig.

Which of you can throw this twig with your hand 50-60 meters? And how many craftsmen are there that will hit an old stump with the butt of this twig at a distance of thirty meters? Most likely there will be few craftsmen, but using a little trick, you can easily throw this twig at a distance of more than a hundred meters, and at a distance of 20 meters hitting that stump the first time will no longer be a problem.

To do this, you need a lace from ankle boots or another suitable rope, approximately the same thickness and length (about a meter).

The center of the picture shows how to fasten the lace to a twig. The knot at the end of the lace is clamped through a turn with the same lace, and if the lace is kept under tension, a fairly strong fastening is obtained.

A little higher up it is shown how to wrap part of the lace around your index finger and hold the throwing rod in your hand.

The dart is thrown with such speed and force using a cord that it seems as if it was shot from a good bow. However, there is no need to make a bow for such shooting. But this is still a theory, even if you have a real lace and a real twig in your hands. Practice will come with time and, with great desire, probably very quickly.

And now a little more theory. In order for a dart to fly well, its center of gravity should be located approximately a quarter of the length of the entire dart from the tip (butt, the heaviest part...).

There are two options for throws, for range and for accuracy. When throwing at a distance, it is advisable to hold the dart so that the back part is slightly outweighed. After all, you will have to throw at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizon. And if they throw for accuracy and not far, then the bow needs to be slightly outweighed. Otherwise, you will have to spend extra effort on holding the dart in the desired position during the throw. It seems like a small thing, but it will definitely affect the final result.

There are other nuances. In a real hunt, the “target” can be both above and below. Here, too, it is necessary to take into account, if possible, the distribution of forces and weight. Preliminary training experience is a must. Now we are talking about the simplest way to throw a dart horizontally or from your height at a target on the ground, like in a shooting gallery.

Especially for uniform throwing of darts (twigs) in a shooting range, it is recommended to mark on the darts the place where the knot is attached (with a cut out and shallow notch) and the place where the dart is grabbed with your fingers (usually with a thin, “rough” winding).

On a real hunt, see for yourself whether you need special marks. Everything is to your taste.

By the way, with a twig 120 (cm) long and with a butt thickness of one and a half centimeters, you can kill an adult goose or wood grouse without a tip, by hitting the butt. There can be no doubt at all about the fatal defeat of a neighbor's chicken, wild duck or pheasant (where they are found). And if you equip such a twig, already a dart, with a traveling tip, then with such a dart you can safely hunt roe deer and young wild boars.

You can also use darts to hunt aquatic creatures such as pike, carp and catfish. For short-range hunting, the simplest versions of darts and tips for them are made. Below is a variant of a spear dart with a wooden tip.

For a smoother flight, the tip of the twig is equipped with a feather stabilizer, like on arrows. You can make a classic plumage from split wing feathers or tie on a tuft of tail feathers. In reality, the tail part of the twig is simply not cut off on a dart. The dart turns out to be longer, but easier to manufacture.

Chapter from the book “The Basics of Survival”, Anatoly Shishkin, 2012

Darts in ready-made games are a structure of four main parts: a metal body (in the form of a torpedo or a drop), a tip, a shank and feathers. A homemade dart can be made from steel wire with a diameter of 2.5-3 mm, and the rod will need to be sharpened at one end. A tail made of whatman paper or feathers is glued to the tail of such a dart with Moment glue. If you choose the paper version of the plumage, then you need to cut out 4 blanks, the dimensions and shape of which are indicated in the figure.
The blanks are bent along the center line at an angle of 90 degrees and all elements are glued together. After the glue has dried, the tail should be painted in a bright color, for example, red. The body of the dart is cast from lead. You can take it from an old cable - cut the core into pieces and melt it over the fire in a steel spoon. To fill, you need a form; it can be a wooden block with a hole drilled to a depth of 35 mm and a diameter of 6 mm. Molten lead is poured into this mold, and when it hardens, the block is split, and a hole with a diameter of 3 mm is drilled in the resulting workpiece. The dart body is attached to the shaft using glue. In order to prevent this part from moving due to impacts, it is necessary to first strengthen the clamp 4 on the rod. At the place where it is secured, a ring groove is made to a depth of 0.5 mm. The lock itself can be a steel washer or nut with an internal diameter of 3 mm. It is secured in the resulting groove with light blows of a hammer. The lead body of the dart must be wrapped with electrical tape, and after that the dart is ready to be thrown at the target.

Ready-made dart targets are made from special fibers with compressed pile, which is not damaged by the tips of the darts. The target circle is divided into sectors of four colors: red, white, black and green. And metal leashes divide the circle into sections. Each allocated area has its own point price. An example of a dart target is shown in the photo.

The base of a homemade dartboard can be made from wood. Several (two or three) planks of pine or linden are glued together in the form of a square with a side of 400 mm. A pair of wooden slats are attached to the back of the part. The working side of the target is processed with a plane and carefully sanded with sandpaper. The target can be drawn and painted on the base itself, or it can be printed on a color printer and replaced as it wears out. The finished target is mounted on a wall or stand. It is recommended to attach the target at a height of about 173 cm from the center of the target to the floor. This is not a whim, but the rules of the International DARTS Federation. Throwing darts is a great way to have fun for both children and adults. You can hang a target and practice your accuracy in your apartment, office, courtyard, or nightclub. But ready-made game sets of this type go on sale, equipped with three, maximum five “shells”. However, there is always a possibility that the dart will be lost or broken. What to do in this case, run to the store? Not necessary. You can do everything yourself.

What materials and tools will be needed

In order to make a dart for darts with your own hands, when starting work, you must first prepare the following consumables:
  • A straight tree branch, preferably elm;
  • Insulating tape;
  • Plastic bottle;
  • A small bicycle spoke or nail, for example, 50 millimeters in length.
Ideal tools:
  • Stationery scissors;
  • Pliers;
  • Some kind of abrasive for sharpening.

The manufacturing process takes no more than 20 minutes.

Step-by-step instruction

In the first step, we cut off a fragment 8-10 centimeters long from the prepared branch, after which we remove the bark. You don't have to do the latter, but there is a chance that the dart will become deformed as it dries. An additional problem may be peeling of the bark, which will lead to disruption of the aerodynamic properties of the product and a deterioration in the degree of accuracy when throwing.

The next step is to wrap the insulating tape on one edge of the wooden fragment, as well as in the middle.

Next, it is necessary, starting from the end where there is no insulation, to make two perpendicular cuts up to 3 centimeters deep into the branch. The wings of the product will subsequently be inserted into them.

We proceed to making the “plumage” from a piece of plastic bottle prepared in advance. You need to cut out a couple of elements, giving them the shape as in the picture below.

In the next step, bend the wings in the middle, achieving an angle of 90 degrees.

Gently tapping, immerse the knitting needle or nail into the wood. This is done on the side where the insulating tape is wound.

Next step: insert the plumage elements. The following photo demonstrates how to do this.

Now we wrap the tail edge of the dart with electrical tape. The wound tape will tightly tighten the cut end, and the tendrils on the plastic will not allow the “feathers” to jump out.

The last thing is sharpening the tip using an existing abrasive in the form of sandpaper, a block, a file, a grinder or a machine.

In this way, you can make as many darts as you like without spending a penny.

Not long ago, while rummaging through my supplies, I discovered an old dartboard. The darts have long been broken and lost. I didn't want to buy a new set, so I decided to make new darts from the body of the handles.
Ordinary gel pens were used as a basis. First, you should remove the rod with paste from them, and also unscrew both caps. Then you need to take plasticine, a needle, matches and a piece of notebook paper.

Take the front cap and insert a needle into it, point outward. Then we take plasticine and tightly seal the recess in the cap. After this, you should take matches and slightly melt the plates, so it will better fit into the cracks in the threads. After this, the plasticine will shrink a little, and you will need to sculpt it more tightly. Then you need to take a piece of notebook paper and roll it into a thick pad, the diameter of the cap. We need it so that the needle does not come out later. We take a pad and sculpt it on top of the plasticine, and stick more plasticine on top. That's it, the main part is ready.

Next you will need to make the fletching for the dart. It is made from paper. To do this, you need to take a landscape sheet, make a square out of it and bend it according to the following pattern. Green lines indicate outward fold, blue lines indicate inward fold. After this, you will get something like a pyramid, the top of which needs to be cut off a little. Then we coat the body of the handle with PVA glue and put on the feathers. Smooth the paper so that there are no bubbles and let it dry. Then we put on a cap with a needle. That's it, the craft is ready.

How to throw. Throwing such a dart is slightly different from the usual one. Such a dart must be balanced on the finger and this place must be marked with something, for example, scratched with a knife. This is the place where you need to hold the dart when throwing. All that remains is to practice throwing it at the target. By the way, such a dart, due to its greater weight, will fly further than a regular one.

There are games that both children and adults would like to play. One of them is darts - a relaxing activity at home and at work, in the apartment and in the yard. Over time, a previously purchased set becomes defective, and lost elements are sometimes impossible to find. In such a situation, the question arises, how to make a dart with your own hands, saving money and time needed to go to the store.

In fact, the procedure for making this homemade product is quite simple. Everyone can find the necessary materials and tools within a few minutes. The creative process will not take more than half an hour.

Necessary materials

The first step is preparing materials. These include:

  • Dry branch of any tree species;
  • Plastic bottle or cardboard;
  • A 30-gauge nail, a gypsy needle or 3-4 cm of steel wire with a diameter of 1.5-2.5 mm;
  • Plaster, tape or insulating tape;
  • Ballpoint pen tip or needle for inflating balls.

Tool

A simple tool with which to make DIY darts even a child can:

  • Wire cutters;
  • Scissors;
  • Sandpaper, file or other abrasive material or tool.

Stages of making a dart

Having prepared everything you need, you can get down to business. In the first step, cut a piece 8-10 centimeters long from the branch. We break the gypsy needle into 2 parts or bite off 3-4 cm of steel wire. This element will serve as the front sharp part of the dart. As an option, you can use a small nail (30 or 40 mm), after first biting off the head with wire cutters.

From the needle for inflating the balls, you need to break off the tip through which air is pumped. This item is not useful. You need the part that screws into the pump when inflating.

Before, how to make a dart dart completely, you can sharpen the wire or nail. If using a sewing needle (gypsy), this is not necessary. However, it is advisable to carry out this procedure at the final stage. The reason is that there is less chance of finger piercing.

The next step is screwing the iron into the wooden base. The nail, needle or wire must be inserted exactly into the middle of the end part of the branch. The core of the tree in this case is softer, which makes this stage quite simple.

The inner diameter of the ball needle is smaller than the diameter of the branch. You need to remove the layer of wood in the part of the dart where the tip is already inserted. Having adjusted the size to the required size, we put on the iron tip. It is important not to overdo it or remove too much layer. The tip must be put on with force, which significantly increases the strength of the product. As an option, you can use a plastic ballpoint pen tip, but it is better to opt for iron.

You need to proceed with particular caution. In the back of the dart, cuts should be made to install the wings. It is preferable to use a knife with a thin blade. This ensures the integrity of the workpiece, preventing it from cracking in unwanted places.

We make two cuts in the form of a cross on the end part of the wooden base. Their depth should not be more than 4 centimeters. Accuracy at this moment is the answer to the question how to make a homemade dart without damaging your fingers or breaking the workpiece prematurely.

The consequence of the cuts will be an expansion of the tail part of the homemade product in diameter. Having applied some effort, we tightly tighten the separated parts of the base by winding the plaster. Similarly, apply the patch just below. Now you can remove the top winding. The cuts are practically invisible.

Many people who like to experiment with scrap materials amaze with their masterpieces made from plastic bottles. In this case, such containers will also come in handy.

Using scissors, cut a butterfly-shaped piece from the bottle. We divide it into two parts, which need to be broken along the length, obtaining an angle of 90 degrees.

The use of such material, resistant to moisture and other influences, is more acceptable than the use of cardboard, since how to make a dart at home, which will last longer, is possible in this case.

At the final stage, it is necessary to install the wings into the existing cuts. Pressing with force, you need to push these elements all the way until they touch the patch. Sharpening the dart. The product is ready.

As a target, you can use any board with a sheet of paper with a drawn target fixed on it.
