Home DIY Hammock stand

There are many ways to suit every taste to equip recreation areas in a country area, but there is an option that everyone will like - a hammock.

The main question when placing a hammock is how and where to secure it? The simplest traditional method is to attach it with ropes to nearby trees, but it is only feasible if there are enough strong, suitable trees on your site and they are located in the place where you planned to arrange a recreation area with a hammock. Unfortunately, suitable trees are the exception rather than the rule, especially if the site is just being developed.

Fortunately, there is a successful universal solution for any site - this hammock stand. Moreover, make a wooden hammock stand with your own hands very simple and anyone can do it. Such hammock stand will fit well into the landscape of the site and is suitable for placement anywhere: On the lawn, for comfortable sunbathing, in the refreshing shade of the garden on a hot day, on the terrace or in the gazebo on a rainy day, and in any other place, since the hammock stand is mobile and can be moved to where it is needed now.

Compared to a bed, sofa or chaise lounge, a hammock has a huge advantage in the sense that resting on it restores strength much better. The invention is not new - the Mayan Indians came up with it. This invention has not lost its relevance to this day.

Types of hammocks

Manufacturers are coming up with more and more new product models, but, despite the delights and bells and whistles, they are classified into several main groups.

The first group is classic hanging hammocks. They are lightweight, durable and reliable, easy to install and dismantle. They are relatively easy to manufacture - they do not require making a frame; you need two trees or poles to which the hammock is attached.

The second group includes frame hammocks. Their main advantage is the ability to install them anywhere on a flat surface. They are divided into collapsible and stationary.

A stationary frame hammock is more reliable than a collapsible one, but when transporting it, you should take into account its weight and dimensions, since it will not be possible to disassemble it, which can cause some inconvenience. Although such problems do not arise with a prefabricated hammock, it is significantly inferior in strength, reliability and durability to a stationary one.

The hammock chair is versatile and practical. Manufacturers often make it so large that several people can sit on it. The price of such a product is slightly higher than that of a classic hanging hammock.

Hammock swings, thanks to their unique design and interesting design, not only serve their intended purpose, but also decorate the site. Some models require two poles or trees to mount, others have their own frame.

A hammock with a canopy is a type of frame hammock, characterized by increased comfort, protecting from direct sunlight in hot weather, and to some extent from precipitation in rainy weather. The price of such a product will be significantly higher than that of a simple frame one.

Rules for using hanging hammocks

Despite the variety of types of hammocks, there are certain rules for their operation. By adhering to them, you will be able to extend the life of the product and make your vacation safe and comfortable.

These are the rules that apply more to hanging hammocks, but in terms of the strength of the base they are also valid for frame hammocks:

After installing the hammock, you should make sure that it is securely and correctly fastened. The thickness of the pillars or tree trunks acting as supports must be at least 20 cm. The depth of the hole in which the pillars are dug should not be less than a meter. If the hammock sags too much, this is unacceptable - its base is damaged.

The distance between trees or poles to which the hammock is attached should be 3 meters, the height of the attachment should be from 1 to 1.5 meters.

First check the reliability of the fastenings. The thickness of the cable, which bears the main load, should not be less than 8 mm.

A tarpaulin or durable fabric is used as a base for a hammock. By saving on fabric, there is a certain risk that you will have to fork out money at the pharmacy. The service life of the base is two to three years, after which the fabric needs to be replaced.

When making your own hanging hammock from a mesh, it is recommended to use cotton threads that are resistant to abrasion, non-slip and well-tightened.

Decorating a hammock

After purchasing or making your own hammock and installing it, you should take care of its pleasant, aesthetic appearance. Although the hammock itself is a decoration for a summer cottage, if there is an opportunity to further decorate it, then why not?

Firstly, if you decorate a hammock with a canopy made of translucent fabric, then in addition to the decor you will receive protection from ultraviolet radiation and, to a large extent, from moisture and wind. To give the bed a more luxurious look, pillows in oriental colors and ribbons with bows are used - all these attributes are conducive to a comfortable rest.

A hammock with a metal frame is simple, convenient and durable. The main thing is to make a reliable design, it can be dismountable or welded tightly - as they say, taste and color have no comrades.

To make it easier for you to decide, let’s look at different options for how you can make a metal hammock stand with your own hands.

Yes, if you don’t have a hammock yet, don’t rush to buy one, perhaps you’ll decide to make one yourself - take a look at our article: “how to make a hammock with your own hands.”

DIY metal hammock stand

Let's start our selection with simpler options.

In general, in most cases round and square metal pipes will be involved; we will discuss different options for connecting them together (which is especially important for those who do not have welding).

So, the first hammock stand made from round metal pipes without welding. In the photo below, on the left it is disassembled, on the right it is assembled, ready for a hammock to be hung on it (by the way, two at once). How was it made? – look at the photo instructions below.

The author made three racks (for two hammocks), if you need to hang only one hammock, you will accordingly make two “tripods”. Each tripod consists of four pieces of pipe. Three are legs, and the fourth will go to the crossbar, on which the hammock will later be hung. The crossbar is assembled from two halves; a half with a reduced pipe diameter at the end is tied to one tripod - so that it fits tightly into the pipe tied to the other stand.

Here you may need welding: weld a piece of pipe of a smaller diameter to the edge of one pipe to ensure a tight connection; Or you can get away with little pain, for example, buy threaded pipes for the crossbar and use fittings to connect metal pipes.

A few words about the design. Everything you need to connect three pipes is shown in photo No. 1.

Namely:

  • Plugs for pipes (on the bottom so that the legs do not sink into the ground);
  • Anchor bolts with rings and nuts for them (the nuts should not fit freely into the pipe);
  • An anchor bracket with a threaded pin (for connecting three rings from anchor bolts together).

Actually, everything is quite simple: you need to hammer one nut into three pipes with a hammer, screw the anchor bolts into them. Which are then connected together using an anchor bracket. Next, tie the “crossbar” pipes to the cord. And so make two tripods.

Those. for an iron stand for a hammock (one) you will need: 6 pieces of steel pipe 180 cm each, two 150 cm each; 6 plugs; 6 anchor bolts with rings and nuts for them; 2 anchor brackets. You can change the dimensions of the pipes (length and diameter) at your discretion.

In addition, using this principle, you can make a stand in reverse for four hammocks at once. What can be useful on a hike, hunting or fishing. And at the dacha it will be very useful for relaxing with friends.

An alternative option for such a stand: drill holes in the pipes and connect them with bolts and nuts.

Please note: for greater stability, the legs were additionally connected with a cord almost in the middle.

And another modernization, but here they already used welding. And notice that the pipes are flattened at the joints with bolts. And a board as a crossbar.

By the way, it is more convenient and easier to work with wood - perhaps you will like our selection more: “”.

In addition, the middle was stabilized using pipes and clamps.

Overall, it turned out to be a good metal hammock stand.

Those who have welding skills can make the following iron hammock stand (by the way, it can also be disassembled and reassembled at any time). This design has only 4 legs. I won’t describe much, everything is visible in the photo, you can experiment with the sizes.

This is what this stand looks like when assembled.

For greater clarity, we made notes in different colors.

We have already mentioned threaded pipes and fittings for connecting metal pipes; with their help, you can assemble a very reliable stand for a hammock.

To begin with, I offer you a visual diagram of such a stand for a hammock made of metal pipes.

And a couple of live examples.

And modernization.

You can find a lot of useful things at a hardware store. Give free rein to your imagination!

Metal hammock stand drawing

I present to your attention a simple drawing of a hammock stand. To create a stand based on it, you will need welding to one degree or another. Below the cut are several different ideas.

The first option with a minimum of welding. Namely: sections of 15-20 centimeters were welded to the support pipes (on which the hammock is hung) from below. They were then fixed with bolts between two pipes at the base, which made it possible to create a durable structure (which can be disassembled for convenient transportation or storage).

In the same stand, all parts are welded, and reinforcing bars are added to the outer sides to stabilize the structure.

In this hammock stand, the bottom was “reinforced” by further adding iron corners on both sides along the entire length of the bottom beam (top right corner).

A video with an example of assembling a factory stand; in principle, by analogy (if you have the necessary materials and skills), you can make such a stand with your own hands.

In the first two videos, a profile was used: 60*40 and 40*40, thickness 2 mm, thrust bearings - strip 80*5 mm.

By the way, you can use old pipes, if available. Paint the finished metal hammock stand in your favorite color, and the result will exceed all expectations.

And the following photo example shows the necessary thing: a system for extending the racks. This is a great way to increase the distance between hooks on supports. After all, the hammock may stretch out, or you simply want to hang a new hammock that is longer than the old one.

Factory model: on it, pay attention to the holes drilled on the supports themselves (for the hooks), i.e. You can adjust the height of the hammock - another useful bonus.

The only thing I want to pay special attention to is that in the options presented above, it may be unsafe to place the iron support in the middle at the bottom. Especially if you have small children! Or make it as low to the ground as possible and not too large. Or check out the stand below with a rectangular base.

And finally, a photo example from the “author burns” series. To connect the structure, special metal corners were used (pictured No. 1), but not timber was inserted into them (which is much more appropriate), but metal pipes with a large diameter. It’s hard to imagine the weight of such a stand, but one person obviously can’t move it. In general, experiment, but without fanaticism!

Original do-it-yourself metal hammock frame

At the finish line, I offer you a hammock on a metal frame in the shape of a boat, or whatever associations you have. True, to create such a miracle of technology, you will need, in addition to welding, a special machine with the help of which the profile is rounded.

Such a round frame for a hammock can be made from a single pipe on legs or assembled from several parts.

I hope we answered your question: how to make a hammock stand with your own hands from metal. And that's all for me. I wish you inspiration and creative success!

Reading time ≈ 4 minutes

At your dacha you want to have your own cozy corner where you can relax in the shade of trees in the fresh air and listen to the chirping of birds. To do this, you can make a comfortable hammock with your own hands, which will also serve as an additional decoration for your own area.

Choosing material for a hammock in the country

The process of creating such a product does not require much knowledge and skills. A hammock can be made from a wide variety of materials, the main thing is to show your wits and all your creative abilities to make a unique product with your own design.

To make a hammock, you can use a variety of dense fabrics or weave it from thick ropes using the macrame technique. When choosing a material, it is important to pay attention to its strength and wear-resistant characteristics so that the product turns out to be reliable and durable.

In this article we will look at an original master class on how to make a hammock with your own hands from non-standard materials. The base of the product will be made of multi-colored thick tape. Such a bright hammock will be a real work of art and will have an incredible impression on your guests.

Making a hammock

We begin work by purchasing materials. To make a hammock, we will need two wooden dowels with a diameter of about 3 cm and a length of 120 cm and three rolls of thick adhesive tape, preferably in different colors. The wider the tape, the easier and faster the process of creating our masterpiece will be.

The product will be made using a technique similar to weaving fabric on a loom. Therefore, to make our task easier, it is advisable to make a wooden base with dimensions that match the dimensions of the future hammock.

To do this, we select two wooden blocks of the required length and nail our prepared dowels to them. The resulting distance between the bars will correspond to the width of the product, and between the dowels - to its length.

After preparing the frame, the weaving process begins. We start working from the upper left edge of the product. A loop is made of adhesive tape on the dowel, then the tape is pulled along the entire length of the product and secured on the opposite side, also using a loop. The adhesive tape is laid out in such a way that the sticky parts overlap each other and the product has a smooth surface on both sides.

Thus, alternating different colors of tape, we line the products across the entire width. In this case, it is important to leave a small gap between the tapes so that the transverse parts of the structure can be threaded through.

For the next step we will need a ruler and a pencil. In order for the transverse tapes to lie on our canvas at the same distance, it is necessary to mark along the edges the places for their location. The distance between the transverse tapes should approximately correspond to the width of the tape. Then the product will have a more attractive appearance, consisting of identical multi-colored squares, and will be stronger and more reliable.

To make it easier to thread the transverse ribbons, you need to attach a hard object to the end of the tape, which will act as a shuttle. After this, a weaving-type process begins. Working with the shuttle up and down, we pass the tape across the entire width of the product and secure the transverse component on the front side.

Thus, we stretch the transverse ribbons at the same distance from each other along the entire length of the hammock for the summer house. When the weaving work is completed, the wooden blocks are separated from our structure and the final stage begins.

Final stage

So that our successful homemade product can be secured between neighboring trees or racks made for this purpose, it is necessary to prepare two strong thick ropes of the same length. The ends of the rope are tied securely around the edges of our wooden dowels. For greater reliability, it is advisable to wrap the remains of our tape in several layers over each knot. The work is finished.

Making a hammock yourself will take no more than 3-4 hours. Detailed step-by-step instructions, as well as visual photos and video materials will help you quickly and easily complete all the work. An interesting and original hammock will become a favorite accessory for outdoor recreation.

Video on how to make a hammock with your own hands

You still don’t know how to make a hanging hammock chair for your home or cottage? Such a resting place can be made from threads, planks, fabric and a gymnastics hoop.

How to make a hanging chair with your own hands from fabric?

Such relaxation swings can be made from various materials, from:
  • fabrics;
  • threads;
  • planks;
  • vines;
  • plastic;
  • rattan
A chair with a rigid frame is made of acrylic, plastic, wicker, metal, rattan.

The second type of these swings for relaxation is a cocoon chair, it is wicker and has a rigid frame.

A chair with a soft base is similar to a hammock, but differs in that the hammock needs to be hung on two sides, while this chair only needs to be hung on one.

There are several methods that can be adopted to make this recreational item at home. The basis of such chairs is a regular hula hoop.

To do this, use:
  • gymnastic metal hoop, diameter 93 cm;
  • padding polyester;
  • dense linen fabric, for example, jeans - 3 m with a width of 150 cm;
  • cotton fabric - 40 cm;
  • belt tape - 8 m;
  • trouser braid - 3 m;
  • four metal buckles;
  • reliable metal ring.
Fold the fabric in half, cut it into two squares with sides of 150 cm. From each, cut out a circle with a radius of 65 cm.

To make even blanks, fold the squares of fabric in half twice, draw a quarter circle, and cut out.

On one side of one of the circles, draw a rectangle, as in the diagram. Make a cut in the center of this figure, not reaching the end of the rectangle, cut to the right and left at an angle of 45°. This is where the straps will be attached.

Make exactly the same slot on the second circle. To reinforce these areas, stitch here with trouser tape.

Notch the edges of both sheets, cutting out in the form of cloves.

Cut the padding polyester into strips, place them along the edge of the round parts, and later the hoop will be located here. Fold the circles of fabric with the wrong sides facing each other, inserting strips of padding polyester inside along the edge. Sew, retreating from the outer circle to the inner one 6 cm.

Insert the hoop, fold the edges of the fabric, and stitch them outside. Cut the belt tape into strips 2 meters long.

To prevent the ends of the belt from fraying and unraveling, they must be melted over a flame.

Place buckles on these blanks and use them to adjust the angle of inclination and height of the product.

As a result, you will get a comfortable hanging chair, which can be created from available materials. The second option also involves the use of fabric.

To make such a hanging swing, take:
  • nylon threads;
  • carbine;
  • hook;
  • dense fabric.
To make this tutorial easier to understand, keep in mind that one inch is 2.54 cm. Therefore, to make a comfortable hanging chair from the ceiling or from a tree, cut the fabric measuring 115 by 86 cm.

From the same fabric you need to cut strips measuring 7.5x15 cm, you will need 14 pieces. Fold each in half and stitch along the edge on the wrong side to create a ribbon measuring 15 x 3.8 cm.

Now fold these blanks in half lengthwise, firmly stitch the ends with a cross and along the perimeter. You have a folded loop of 7.5 x 3.8 cm.

Now you need to sew 7 such parts on one side and the same number on the other side of the main fabric.

Through each such loop, pass a neon rope folded in half. Tie to secure these threads.

Fold the edge of the fabric twice, insert loops here, sew, making three parallel seams to secure the workpieces well.

Look at how the ropes need to be secured to securely fasten them.

Tie the upper edges of the ribbons with knots onto a strong wooden stick. Secure the structure with a carabiner, then hang it on a reliable ceiling mount.

A hanging hammock chair will be very comfortable to use when you sew two pillows for it - for the seat and the back.

You can do it quickly. To do this, you also cut out a rectangle from thick fabric; you need to tuck it on the right and left sides in order to thread a strong rope into the resulting drawstring.

It will be enough to put a low pillow here, and the place to rest is ready. It is best to hang such fabric chairs using a wooden plank. You need to drill 4 holes in it along the edges, insert the edges of the ropes and the central thread here. All this is fixed with strong knots.

Chains can be used instead of ropes. To do this, holes are made along the edges of the hammock chair, where metal rings are attached. Using carabiners, the chain is fixed in these holes and at the top.

There are designs made from other materials, check them out.

Hanging hammock chair made of wood

It’s nice to relax on such a chair in the countryside in the fresh air. It can be made from Euro pallets, thereby solving the problem of their disposal and getting the right thing almost for free.

To make such a hanging hammock, take:

  • boards measuring 600 by 120 mm or 700 by 150 mm (the thickness of these boards is 10–15 mm);
  • varnish or stain;
  • 10 meters of nylon paracord cord;
  • drill and bit;
  • sandpaper;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw.
If you are making a chair from a pallet, then carefully disassemble it, now remove the nails. Where there are holes left from them, these edges need to be sawed off evenly.

Sand each board to ensure there are no splinters left on the surface. Treat these blanks with stain or varnish intended for outdoor use.

Drill holes at the edges of each board at a distance of 5 cm, place the two pieces side by side, weave the cord first diagonally in one direction, then in the other to connect the boards.

In the same way, tying the laces crosswise, connect the other elements of the hammock.

The ropes do not need to be tightened too tightly so as not to deform the structure. The hammock elements should not overlap each other.

Drill holes in the top board and the second one from the bottom. This is where you will thread a strong rope to hang the hammock from a frame made of four planks. That, in turn, needs to be attached to a rope that is attached to a tree or, for example, to the ceiling of the veranda.

You can make a similar hanging hammock chair from wood in another way.

To make such a swing, take:
  • wooden planks of suitable size, 1.5–2 cm thick;
  • self-tapping screws with wide heads;
  • durable nylon cord.
Lay the boards on a flat surface at a distance of 1 cm from each other. Tie them on one side with a snake cord in one direction, then in the opposite direction.

On the wrong side, connect both ends of this cord and secure them with a self-tapping screw. Braid the boards on the other side in the same way.

Attach a cord to each plank on the reverse side using a self-tapping screw. Tie a rope from the bottom and top of the chair on one side and the other, align the slings, and hang your product. We need to dwell on this issue in more detail, since the hanging chair must be securely attached to the ceiling.

Methods for attaching a hanging hammock chair

If you want to hang a chair at home, you need to choose fasteners based on your specific ceiling. If you have a solid concrete ceiling without voids, then to implement your plan you will need:

  • powerful anchor;
  • metal chain;
  • hook;
  • drill or hammer drill;
  • drill for concrete.
Mark where you will make the hole, drill it using the appropriate tools. Attach the anchor here, hang a hook and a chain on it, the second edge of which is attached to the hanging chair.

You can buy such parts individually or a set, which is a kit designed for attaching hanging devices.

If there are voids in the ceiling slab, then you must first make holes in it, then fill it with a special compound called a chemical anchor.

A metal anchor is inserted into the filled hole in the desired position. It is necessary to leave it for 2-3 days so that the soft composition completely hardens, only then can you hang the hammock chair.

If the ceiling is reinforced with strong floor beams, a special mount for hanging chairs will hold well on it. As you can see, it is fixed with bolts.

The following design is suitable for suspended ceilings. The upper part is mounted on a solid concrete ceiling, then it passes through the suspended ceiling. A hook or ring with a decorative cuff is screwed into this, and a hanging hammock chair is attached to the device.

Reliable slings can be made from linen or jute rope. You can perfectly secure several ropes using macrame.

This uses a double flat knot. It is created by alternating weaving a left and right flat knot.

How to weave a hanging hammock chair with your own hands?

This is one of the simple options. For such a hanging chair, take:
  • four wooden or plastic strips;
  • rope rope;
  • drill;
  • threads
The two strips should be larger in diameter; drill holes in them along the edges with a drill. Insert two slightly thinner planks here perpendicularly and secure them with fasteners. You can use a metal rod with a thread and screw washers here.

On the top bar, collect the required number of threads, bending each in half. Create a canvas using . Here a “checkerboard” pattern of flat knots was used. If it’s still difficult for you to master macrame, then sew a rectangle from reliable fabric, tuck its edges at the top and bottom, stitch with a margin to insert reliable strips here.

If you want to weave a hanging chair using macrame, then at the end of the work, tie the threads to the bar, tie them with knots, cut them, leaving the fringe.

All that remains is to thread the rope slings through the holes made in the transverse slats, after which you can hang the hammock from the ceiling or from a tree.

The second option is more complex, but no less interesting in execution.

Before weaving a hammock, you need to prepare:
  • large gymnastic hoop made of steel;
  • two small gymnastic rings with a diameter of 17 cm;
  • polyester cord with a diameter of 0.5 cm;
  • hook;
  • scissors.

To make a seat, use a hook to crochet a large openwork napkin of a suitable diameter. To do this, first cast on 10 air loops and connect them into a ring.
  1. Complete the first row according to the pattern: double crochet, chain 1, then in the same way.
  2. The second row consists of a double crochet and two chain stitches, also knit to the end of this row.
  3. In the third row you need to alternate double crochet and 5 chain stitches.
  4. In the next rows, add two air loops in each.

In the last row you will need to braid a hoop to create a seat for the hammock chair. If you don’t want or don’t know how to crochet, then you can make it using this braid.

To do this, you need to act in a similar way when darning items. First, tie the threads to the hoop horizontally parallel to each other, then vertically, passing them between the ones you just created in a checkerboard pattern.

If you are interested in the macrame technique, using simple knots you will make a woven mesh for the seat.

To create this you will need:
  • 2 threads 400 cm long;
  • 4 threads of 450 cm;
  • 4 pieces of threads 550 cm each;
  • 8 threads of 600 cm.
Tie 8 threads to the top of the hoop in pairs of two, leaving a distance of 6 cm between them.

Now make two flat corners on each to secure these elements.

Tie the remaining threads on the right and left sides of these central blanks. First, to the left and to the right of them are two, each having a length of 550 cm; then 2 x 450 cm; after that, one at a time, 400 cm long.

Starting from the center, weave a checkerboard pattern, leaving equal distance between the knots. In this way, fill the entire gymnastic hoop.

See how you need to pull the threads at a 45 degree angle to get a similar effect.

Now you can make a suspension for the chair. It will be delicate and beautiful, but creating something like this requires patience.

First of all, cut 20 ropes, each 10 m long. Tie them in the center with a knot to mark the middle. Make 12 flat knots on these blanks.

Turn the work over and make 15 more flat knots. This part will be the loop.

For the convenience of weaving a hammock chair, move this piece upstairs, hanging it on a carabiner or on a belt.

Make a loop from this ribbon by making 4 flat knots.

You need to weave a so-called bell. To do this, turn the work sideways towards you, make a row of flat knots, stepping back 4 cm from the last row of weaving.

The first row of this bell will consist of 10 knots. To create a second one, you need to retreat another 4 cm from this first one. Make 10 knots in a checkerboard pattern relative to this one. Before making the third, step back a little lower by 5 cm.

Now you need to braid a small gymnastic leather hoop with threads.

Tie 4 threads in the center of the hoop, and 2 along its edges.

Attach the hoop with threads and begin weaving the back. To make it gradually expand, start tying the side threads; you will need about 20 pieces.

Continue creating the backrest for the hammock chair. You can use the pattern provided or your own weaving.

Along the edge of the design, make two rows of flat knots or one row of rep knots. When the back is completed, tie it to the hoop first in the middle, and then, pulling evenly, attach the side threads.

This is a wonderful hammock chair or something similar you can make.
