String art materials. Technique and master class of string art: paintings from nails and isothreads, photos and videos

Content

It’s simply impossible to count how many different types of needlework there are, but if banal knitting or embroidery is not for you, it’s worth trying to learn something new. For example, ordinary nails and threads can create an amazingly beautiful picture using modern string art weaving techniques. Interested? Then find out: what materials are needed for this, how to draw up a diagram correctly and master a few simple master classes.

What is string art

An unusual type of needlework, string art, was invented in England almost four centuries ago. Using ordinary nails and threads, weavers of that time created decorative patterns on planks, which they later decorated the walls of their own homes with. Over time, the ancient weaving technique was reworked and improved several times, but the version of string art from Mary Bull became especially popular in the world. With her help, the English researcher taught children algebra and geometry.

What you need for string art

The main supplies for creating a string art pattern are nails and threads. You can use thin yarn for knitting, ordinary sewing threads, floss or silk. In addition to this standard set, you will also need:

  • a piece of plywood or board;
  • thick cardboard if you are going to make a postcard or master string art with children;
  • template, photo, spot diagram or finished image;
  • paint, if the base needs to add color;
  • a hammer for driving nails or an awl for making holes in paper.

Isothread technique - diagrams with numbers for beginners

If you have never tried to master string art before, then you will have to start from the very basics. Schemes with numbers in this case are a godsend for you. Arrows on them indicate the movement of the thread and the type of connection of all elements. To make it easier to work, apply the diagram to cardboard or wood in its original form, in the first case on the back side of the product.

For beginners, mastering the string art technique starts with learning the principle of filling an angle or circle. All other shapes: circle, oval, square or letters are only derivatives. To practice your skills, draw a right angle on a piece of paper with lines equal to 10 and 5 centimeters. Divide the long strip into 10 equal parts, 1 centimeter each, and number them. Divide the short strip by half a centimeter, also mark it with numbers - the diagram is ready. The thread must be led from one edge of the top to the other on both sides.

What to make from nails and threads

It would seem that simple threads, ordinary nails - well, what good can come out of such a set of tools? In fact, with the correct weave of yarn, a printed pattern can miraculously turn into a three-dimensional picture. For the string art technique, ideas can be drawn from anything. Did you like the image on the Internet? Feel free to download and print.

Using string art, you can make a three-dimensional image of a pet: a cat, a dog, a parrot. Abstraction lovers can master the technique of creating multi-colored panels. The correct geometric shapes of the lines will not become a hindrance to creating a postcard for Valentine's Day. Flowers, insects, wildlife, kitchen utensils - all this can be easily turned into paintings made from threads and nails.

Panel made of threads and nails

Instead of an ordinary purchased painting, it is better to hang a picturesque string art panel on the wall in the central room. The main feature is that the finished image should not have many small details that distract attention. In any case, you will have to make the base for the panel using threads and nails with your own hands, but you can trust children to stretch the multi-colored lines.

Painting with threads on nails

If you like plot drawings that you will have to pore over for a single day, then you should master the creation of a picture. For example, a canvas with animals, cartoon characters or fairy tales is suitable for the interior of a nursery. A DIY picture made of nails and threads with an interesting food theme will be a worthy decoration in the kitchen, and in the bedroom you can hang images of sailboats, clovers or delicate flowers.

Postcard with threads

Are you going to a friend's birthday party or preparing to congratulate your loved one on Valentine's Day? Then make an original string art postcard from threads. The pattern will have to be drawn on thick paper using a needle and thread. For these purposes, buy thick cardboard; regular printed paper tears too easily and quickly loses its shape. A postcard using the isothread technique will look beautiful if the finished template is glued to cardboard of a larger diameter.

DIY string art - master class

So, you have bought everything you need and are ready to start string art. Where to start? To begin with, you should master simple patterns, or better yet, use ready-made master classes or repeat the ideas of experienced needlewomen. Today you will learn how to make various crafts from nails and threads, learn about the basic principles of decorative weaving and creating incredibly beautiful patterns.

Heart

You should start getting acquainted with a new type of art with the simplest images, for example, making a heart out of threads and nails with your own hands. Even children can do this craft if adults help drive in carnations. In addition, such string art can be a great gift or just decorate a wall in your bedroom. This step-by-step master class will make your task easier:

  1. On a blank sheet of paper, draw a neat heart with a pencil.
  2. Place points where you are going to nail. It is important to make marks at the same distance; the appearance will depend on this.
  3. Place the paper against the plywood. Drive the nails into the places that you previously marked with a pencil.
  4. Remove the paper template from the nails. Use tweezers to remove any remaining clean sheet from the plywood.
  5. Make a neat knot on the central top nail and pull the tip of the thread diagonally.
  6. Continue wrapping the rope around the nails so that each new wrap creates a sharp angle.
  7. Once all the studs are tied, secure the end of the thread and carefully trim the tail.

Flower using isothread technique

Having learned how to embroider a circle or corner using the string art technique, you can easily move on to creating simple flower arrangements. The next step-by-step master class will teach you how to create flowers using the string art technique using the simplest example - dandelions. To work, you only need a sheet of paper, a pencil, an awl and thread of two colors: white and green. Step by step floral embroidery iso-thread looks like this:

  1. Starting at the top of the sheet, draw three circles in random order, each 5-6 centimeters in diameter.
  2. To get many dandelion inflorescences inside the circles, draw another small circle, from which draw 5 connecting lines upward.
  3. Make the stems and draw the leaves of the future flower. Make the necessary punctures.
  4. Embroider dandelion inflorescences with white threads in a circular pattern, starting your work from the very center. Remember that each part of the large circle is a separate inflorescence.
  5. To make the leaves voluminous, divide them into several triangles and embroider them with green threads according to the principle of the corner.
  6. At the very end, use small stitches to connect the base to the buds.

Having mastered simple pictures of a heart and flowers, you can proceed to more complex compositions and weave a portrait using the string art technique. You can take a ready-made photo of your pet, try to bring it to life, or depict the figures of movie characters with threads. As an example, take the monochrome portrait of lovers from the following master class on string art:

  1. Drive nails around the entire perimeter of the plywood sheet.
  2. Cut out a couple in love so that they represent a single whole.
  3. Place the image in the center of the panel and make marks for the nails with a pencil.
  4. Remove the paper and drive the nails in at equal distances.
  5. Start filling the picture according to the principle of creating sharp corners, but not from the central part, but by drawing only the general background with white thread.

Deer

Do you want to decorate your apartment in Scandinavian style? To do this, you only need an aged flat piece of wood, white threads, decorative nails with a small head, a hammer and a few hours of free time. Using the string art technique, the deer from the next step-by-step lesson will look almost like a real one. The creation principle is as follows:

  1. Clean the surface from excess chips and cover with a layer of varnish. If desired, the board can be painted any color.
  2. Print out a large stencil of a deer's head and cut out the design along the outline.
  3. Place a piece of paper in the center of the wooden sheet. Make marks for driving in at a distance of 5-7 mm. This step will be easier if you use graph paper.
  4. Carefully drive in the nails and start creating a masterpiece from the very bottom of the design.
  5. Fasten the tip of the thread to a nail and make a general outline, drawing the yarn like a snake around each nail.
  6. The further process is a matter of taste. You can use straight geometric lines or distribute the thread randomly inside the outline.

A DIY thread tree will look very symbolic on the wall. Coping with its creation is as simple as weaving a heart from isothreads. All you need for this picture is: a piece of smooth plywood, a hammer, chalk, green thread and nails with a beautiful head. Then just follow the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Draw a sketch of the tree in chalk on a wooden board, trying not to create too many small details, but rather working out the outline.
  2. Then drive the nails in at a distance of about 1 centimeter from each other and erase the chalk outline with a damp cloth.
  3. At the base of the tree, tie the tip of the thread and start by creating an outline using the same principle as in the previous master class.
  4. Having completed this stage, run the thread in a chaotic manner, first at the roots of the tree, then on the trunk and branches.
  5. Make as many straight lines as you wish.

Ship

This type of needlework is good because even small children can be taught it. On one of your free evenings, try making a craft out of thread and cardboard with your child. Such works are popular in preschool institutions and even take first place in handmade exhibitions. Let the boat become your first joint craft. The principle of its implementation is as follows:

  1. On the back side of the thick cardboard, draw a right angle with a vertical line 10 centimeters long and a horizontal line 5 cm long.
  2. Step back 2-3 mm to the left and repeat the size of the image in mirror image.
  3. Draw a semicircle below. Using an awl, make holes in the cardboard that are equal in length.
  4. Start embroidering with blue thread from the right corner. Pass the needle through the bottom outer hole from the wrong side.
  5. Draw a straight line to the top, turn the work over and thread the needle into the adjacent hole.
  6. So make 9 parallel lines and start working on another sail.
  7. To do this, change the thread to a different color and embroider the sail according to the classic principle of filling the corner.
  8. Use diagonal lines to fill the bottom semicircle with contrasting thread.

Birds are a symbol of flight, lightness and freedom. However, not every type of bird has such a clear and simple symbolic meaning. For example, the owl is considered a symbol of chastity, insight and the ability to foresee the future. This bird is depicted in all types of needlework; in the string art technique, the owl was no exception:

  1. On a blank sheet of paper, draw a general outline of an owl, make two large eyes, outline the wings and tail.
  2. Transfer the sketch to a piece of plywood and secure with nails, being careful not to leave large gaps between them.
  3. Select a thick brown thread and outline all the contours.
  4. Arrange the lines in a random direction so that each stud is involved in the work.
  5. Additionally, take a white thread. Shade the chest area and wings by making a few diagonal stitches.
  6. Finish the work by tying the end of the thread in a tight knot.

My young ladies were making crafts the other day paintings made of threads and nails using string art technique and now they demand that I urgently (!!!) publish master class with their photographs)))

I received the “magic kick-off” and now I can resume my publications again after a long break. Thanks, kids! Otherwise, I didn’t know where to start, because I filmed so much over the summer. So, friends...

Hi all! How I miss you!

Not children's creativity.

Crafts made from nails and threads.

The girls took part in a competition and had to make a craft from waste material, i.e. practically out of garbage. Well, what kind of garbage do we have at home? That's right, construction! A pile of wood scraps in the carpentry.

I turned the boards over in my hands, figured out what I could do with them, and followed my husband. Having made him happy with the message that his work was over for today and we would do it with the children paintings on boards using string art technique, gave him the boards and dimensions and left to prepare the remaining materials.

String art — literally translated from English it sounds very beautiful: “string art.” And the works made using this technique are no less beautiful! See for yourself.

These works were completed by my girls (11 and 7 years old) with a little help from us.

STRING ART FOR BEGINNERS

STRING ART TECHNIQUE

To make a painting using this technique we will need some simple materials:

  • A solid base of board, plywood, OSB or chipboard - any material that can be nailed. The thicker it is, the better!
  • Nails with a head at least 1 cm long. Longer lengths are better, it’s more convenient to work with, but it all depends on the thickness of the base, we don’t want the nails sticking out from the inside, right? And we remember that the deeper the nail is driven, the stronger it holds and does not wobble. We used thin furniture nails 2 cm long.
  • Strong threads: iris or thin yarn.
  • Template - any drawing, silhouette, photo, or even a picture torn from a magazine. There are many ready-made diagrams on the Internet, with markings already applied.

STRING ART MASTER CLASS

1. Prepare a wooden base for the future painting.

The husband cut boards 15 by 20 cm, rounded the corners and sanded them. I covered them with tinted furniture wax. Wax is expensive, professional. I took it for testing, but you can make your own inexpensively. And after tinting the wood with stain, cover it with it. I did it this way

Paintings using the string art technique look best on a contrasting basis. Those. if the threads are light, the base should be made dark (painted or tinted), and vice versa, if the thread is black, then the base should be painted in light colors. The stronger the contrast, the more beautiful and brighter the picture looks.

I applied one layer of wax with a brush and rubbed it with a lint-free cloth. Dried it at an accelerated pace over an electric heater. I was in a hurry))) Ideally, I should have made it darker and had more layers. But... this is a children's competition))

2. Prepare the threads.

Paintings in a monochrome style look very cool. White thread on a dark background looks simply gorgeous. But we chose a more children's theme: “Seasons.” Four pictures of different colors:

  • Winter is a white snowflake
  • Spring is a bluebird
  • Summer - yellow sun
  • Autumn - red leaf

I, so confident that I had EVERYTHING, climbed into my “hamster holes” and then a bummer awaited me! A bunch of white irises, a couple of brown ones and not a single colored one!!! And it’s late in the evening, it’s too late to go to the store.

So I dyed the threads myself. Without sparing, I spread textile paints, tore off the labels from the iris and immersed the balls in the paint. Periodically I pressed the threads with my hands so that they were soaked through. Left it for 30 minutes. Then I washed it under running water, squeezed it hard and again - accelerated drying on an electric heater. The red one was not painted over, apparently the paint was squeezed, replaced with a brown factory one.

STRING ART PICTURES

3. Attach a template or diagram of the painting.

I placed dots in the picture with a marker, about one centimeter apart, so that the children could understand where to drive in the nails.

I attached the template to the board with masking tape. This is not necessary - you can immediately drive in 3-4 nails from opposite sides and the template will not “run away” anywhere.

5. Drive nails along the outline of the template.

Drive the nails to the same depth! Working with thread on nails of different heights is very inconvenient; the thread slips. It is better to immediately pull out a sunken nail with pliers.

Device-1 for string art

PIN

To prevent our children from breaking their fingers while swinging a hammer, our brilliant dad came up with such a device. I drilled a hole in the clothespin between the “jaws” with the thinnest drill. It turned out to be very convenient: both hands are intact, and all the nails are driven to the same depth! I think that even without a hole, a clothespin would be useful.

6. Tear off the string art template from the board

7. Tie a thread to the nail

8. And we begin to create a picture using the string art technique!!!

We stretch the thread and randomly, catching on any nail, fill the space. The thread is always taut!!! We make a turn around the nail and pull the thread to the opposite side. It turns out to be such a web. We make two turns around some nails so that the thread does not slip off.

Having finished the web, we make an outline: we pull the thread only along the perimeter of the work, making a “figure eight” between two nails. We made 2-3 figure eights on each pair of nails and moved on. Until we came to the beginning. There the thread was cut and tied in knots around a nail under the product.

Device-2 for string art

PEN

Dad came up with another device. I threaded the thread through the handle and only then tied the tip to the first nail.

This way, it is easier to fill out a template in which the nails are often filled, after a small interval.

String art | Sun

My daughter made the sun the same way: first she filled in the middle and then traced it with figure eights along the contour.

STRING ART | SNOWFLAKE

The snowflake, which looked very simple, turned out to be the most difficult! Everything was fine until the template was torn from the board... There was a whole bunch of nails driven in on the board, which did not at all resemble a snowflake!))) Just a forest of nails!!! I had to print out another template and, looking at it, lay out the “rays” with threads.

We draw conclusions by looking at the finished product: where the distance between the nails is more than 1 cm, and in some places as much as 2 cm, the work looks less neat and rough. So 1 cm is just right!

String art | Maple Leaf

Everything is the same here. The same confusion. Only the space was filled not from edge to edge, but from the edge of the sheet to the veins, then between them. Then they drew figures of eight along the contour and along the veins of the leaf.

My girls are happy, tired (they worked for half a day!) and happy)))

Everyone loves to be photographed! Well, it couldn’t have happened without it))):

Especially when you have someone to learn from...

Like tired and tongue on the shoulder)))

The Addams Family... I love you, my Chukchi))))

That's all! In the morning they took me to school. He will go to the region for a competition.

Craft from waste material using string art technique “Seasons” by the Khvostov sisters)))

But my husband and I were left with a feeling of some dissatisfaction... We tried for half a day, sawed, painted, drove in nails, pulled threads... Well, okay, we weren’t the children, but we were there all this time and helped. They made such a beauty))

But in the end, she is not at home. I went to the competition in exchange for a certificate. Products are not always returned to us.

I cowardly suggested that the children leave it at home, hang it on the wall in their room, and I’ll print the certificate for you myself...

But, alas... The children looked at me with blank eyes. Like, mom, what are you doing?!! This is a GRADE FOR COMPETITION! What if we win?!! What if they congratulate you at the line?!! This is so COOL!!!

In general, I’m looking for a theme, new templates and preparing boards... We’ll do it again! But for myself. I really liked the string art technique itself and the finished paintings.

Friends, don’t be lazy, go to the Pinterest website and type in their search bar string art. This is something! So many beautiful and original ideas! Different execution techniques, different carnations and hats, collages with additional objects and inscriptions, with a filled-in design and vice versa - with a background...

And I assure you that tomorrow, having stocked yourself with nails and threads, and tearing off a board from the nearest fence, you will be hammering the whole house, creating something wonderful - a painting in the style of string art!!!

Yes Yes! And even those who claim that their hands grow from the wrong place will cope just fine!!!

Inspiration and good luck to you!!!

And don’t forget to write to me later and brag about what you did, okay?!

That's all. See you!

A small but very nice addition.

A couple of days after I published this post, I received a letter from a reader: “ Thank you for the good mood and interesting ideas that you sometimes give to complete strangers. We are inspired by your creativity and attitude to life. In the photo, my son and I work for the Autumn Fantasies competition, your idea with the girls.”

Is it really very beautiful?!! And how great it is that someone scrolled through my page and got to work!

If you are interested, you can look at the link, I did a detailed MK.

Hooray! One more addition!!! Another craft from a reader! Wonderful Christmas tree with a dancing star!

I’m sitting now and smiling... It’s so nice. The day spent creating this post was not wasted)))

More photos from a reader!!! Gorgeous daisy from Olga Goryacheva’s boys. You can enlarge the photo.

AND FINALLY, RESULTS!!!

OUR GIRLS WON!!!

BOOKED FIRST PLACE IN THE DISTRICT COMPETITION!!! In which they participated, just for a moment :) the children of the town itself and a whole bunch of surrounding villages, including ours!

I’ll take a photo of the girls and post a photo with a certificate. Yeah, people, literacy is cool)))))

I don't say goodbye anymore. Yours

String art has long been a real art. Our master class is perhaps for beginners in this matter. The main thing is that this activity brings you pleasure both in the process and in the result.

So, what does it take to make a product like the one in the photo?

What you need

Necessary materials:

  1. Wooden board - 0.5-1 inch thick, size of your choice,
  2. Pencil,
  3. Ruler,
  4. Compass,
  5. Nails,
  6. Hammer,
  7. Colored threads.

We measure and make marks

It is more convenient and better to pull the threads if the wooden board is an equilateral square and the thickness does not exceed an inch.

Mark the center of government. Prepare the pencil and compass, making sure that the line of the compass and the line of the pencil are at the same level. Make notes. Draw a circle on the board using a compass. Circle of any diameter. You can draw more circles.

It is better if you mark the places where you want to hammer the nails. Use a clear ruler to mark the position of the nails along the circle. The photo shows points after every 1 cm.

Hammering nails

Now start driving nails at the marked points along the drawn circle.

Drive the nails halfway into the wood board.

This step takes time and it can be quite boring, but you must drive the nails patiently, since the whole art depends on the position of the nails. To cheer yourself up a little, it’s completely permissible to sing your favorite song)

Start

The colors used for this art are red, yellow, green, blue and purple. Although it would be more fun to use sazu in all the colors of the rainbow.

Choose a nail as a starting point. Take a thread, wrap it around any nail and tie a knot. Apply a drop of glue on the knot to do this, it's safe.

Count the nails and try to create an equilateral triangle with the string wrapped around the nails. After creating the first triangle you will return to the starting question again. Just skip that nail and grab the next one. Create another equilateral triangle by wrapping the following nails. Keep doing the same.

Take a thread of a different color. Wrap it around the nail, next to the previous nail (but not the same nail). Continue creating equilateral triangles until all the nails are covered.

Currently, a large number of types of needlework are known. Unlike the usual knitting or embroidery, string art is something new. Few would have thought that connecting nails and threads could result in the creation of a picture of amazing beauty. The technique is simple and anyone can master it if desired.

What is string art?

Isothread is a type of needlework in which pictures are created using ordinary nails and threads. Literally translated from English, the name means string art. Indeed, if you look closely, the threads really resemble stretched strings. Using this technique, you can get both a small and simple and complex design.

Although string-art paintings use straight lines, this is not a problem for obtaining a three-dimensional image as a result. Some may think that this technique is simply crossing threads, although in fact it is an art direction that requires care and preliminary calculations before starting work on creating a painting.

String art - history

This type of needlework was invented by English weavers almost four centuries ago. Then they pulled the threads in a certain sequence onto nails driven into the board and as a result they received a panel with which they decorated the walls. At the end of the 19th century, the English researcher and mathematician Mary Boole improved the technique and began to teach children mathematics with its help, depicting various geometric figures.

Modern string art is an art form in the history of which the American John Eichinger, the chief designer of the Open Door Company, was the first to write his name. Using this technique, he began to create mandalas that were distinguished by their grace and unique optical illusions. Then the designer gained followers who proved that amazing pictures can be made.

String art techniques

Currently, paintings from nails and threads are created using the following techniques:

  1. Corner. In this case, the thread moves in such a way that there is a right angle between the vertical and horizontal lines.
  2. Circle. The technique consists of connecting nails located on the opposite side. Visually divide the circle into two parts, in one - the movement is carried out to the left, and in the other - to the right.
  3. Arc. Filled in the same way as a circle. They start from the edge, then move at a right angle, and then continue moving to the side.

What do you need for string art?

The main accessories for obtaining the desired pattern are nails and threads. In addition, isothread paintings are created using:

  • wooden plank or thick cardboard;
  • paints;
  • hammer;
  • pencil;
  • pliers;
  • scissors;
  • drawing template.

Basis for string art

The subject and size of the image determines what the work will be done on. Paintings using the string art technique are made on bases from:

  • wood;
  • plywood;
  • cardboard;
  • polystyrene foam

If necessary, the base can be painted in any color or a sheet of colored paper can be glued onto it. For beginners, it is recommended to start with cardboard or foam board as they are much easier to insert nails into, which is important for getting started, especially with children. In addition, no one forbids experimenting with bases; for example, you can use cork.

Nails for string art

To create paintings using isothread technique, the quality of these components is of great importance. Nails with heads are chosen especially carefully; their length should be within 1-2 cm. It is important that they are all made of durable material and look the same, this is the only way to get a clear image that will delight you with its beauty for a long time.

Threads for string art

To create a picture, you can use any available threads. The pattern is created by gradually wrapping them around pre-driven nails. The tension force should be medium; if you overdo it, the nails may begin to bend and the threads may break. If the tension is weak, the threads will get tangled, making the pattern unclear. The string art technique is created using the following threads:

  • sewing;
  • polyamide;
  • knitting;
  • embroidery;
  • darning;
  • film;
  • combined.

String art - ideas

This type of popular creativity is unique because it combines things that are incompatible at first glance: the lightness of threads and the stiffness of nails. String art paintings can bring a huge number of ideas to life. Popular options include the following images:

In most cases, beginners begin their acquaintance with the technique by creating a string art heart. Even a child can cope with such a task, however, if one of the adults drives the nails into the base. Such a craft can not only decorate the interior, but also become an excellent gift. You can gradually complicate your drawings by adding other techniques and creating paintings of varying levels of complexity.

How to make string art?

Having become acquainted with this type of needlework, it is important to understand the technique and understand where to start. You need to decide on the idea you want to bring to life. It is recommended to start learning with easy options, gradually complicating the drawings. The DIY string art technique consists of the following steps:

  1. The base is sanded with sandpaper and painted in the desired color.
  2. The diagram is printed or drawn on paper.
  3. They are secured to the base with tape, and something is placed underneath the plywood so that the nails do not damage the table covering.
  4. The nails begin to be driven in gradually along the edge of the template. They should be located at the same distance from each other.
  5. Once all the nails are driven in, the paper template is removed.
  6. The threads are selected depending on the idea of the string art.
  7. The end is secured under the cap and the thread begins to be pulled, following the pattern. When the thread runs out, the ends are tied and the excess is cut off.

The variety of types of needlework is designed to satisfy the most fastidious demands of craftswomen. But if simple knitting and embroidery are not for you, then we suggest mastering a completely new technique - isothread or string art. To create paintings using this technique, no special knowledge is required: everything you need to know to master this type of needlework is given in this post.

What is string art

String art, as a way of creating compositions, was invented in England back in the 16th century. From ordinary nails and threads, weavers created stunning decorative designs on tablets that served as home decoration. Gradually, the technique became more complex and refined, eventually becoming a popular type of needlework that was captivated by needlewomen of all ages.

The isothread technique gained its unprecedented popularity thanks to the English researcher Mary Boole, who used threads and nails to teach children algebra and geometry.

Tools for creating paintings using string art technique

Isothread is one of the most low-cost techniques. To create your first composition you will only need nails and thread. A set of nails can be purchased at any hardware store, choosing the appropriate length and width of the head. Every needlewoman can find threads for string art. You can use thick knitting yarn, floss or silk threads, thick sewing threads.

In addition you will need:

  • board or piece of plywood

  • thick cardboard - used as an alternative to plywood for creating cards

  • diagram or finished image

  • paint for emphasizing individual areas of the composition

  • hammer or awl

String art: first steps to mastering the technique

If you have never encountered the isothread technique before, then you should not immediately take on complex images. Start with the basics, with the simplest monochromatic patterns. Beginning needlewomen are very helpful in diagrams with numbers, where all the movements of the thread and the type of their connection are indicated by arrows.

You need to start mastering the technique by studying the principles of filling corners and circles. The remaining shapes: square, oval and letters are derived from the basic elements, so they are much easier to master.

It would seem that there is nothing difficult in creating a picture from such familiar tools as nails and threads. In the iso-thread technique, correct weaving of threads is very important, once mastered, you will be able to create stunning three-dimensional paintings.

The big advantage of string art is that you can choose absolutely any sketch to create a picture. This comes in handy when you need to create a unique drawing with a portrait of a specific person, numbers or words.

In the first stages, use plain threads for string art. In the future, add additional shades to the color scheme, creating multi-colored panels.

Many people believe that regular geometric lines are not appropriate in images with flowers, insects, wildlife or portraits, where smooth transitions and the absence of obvious angles are important. But string art copes with this task perfectly, conveying the depth of color through the use of threads of several shades or nails of various lengths.

String art: master classes on creating compositions

So, all the necessary tools for string art have already been purchased. So where to start? Take simple diagrams with tips as a basis, or better yet, use the tips of experienced needlewomen. In our article we will present 3 master classes, from the simplest to the most complex, and will tell you how to independently create incredibly beautiful patterns and images using the isothread technique.

Heart using isothread technique

One of the simplest images that beginners can do is the heart. Even a child can handle such a composition, provided that adults hammer carnations into the board. This craft will make a great gift or just decorate a wall in your living room.

Draw a neat heart on a blank sheet of paper or print the finished image on a printer. Arbitrarily place points in the picture where the nails will be nailed. Place marks at the same distance; the final appearance of the product will depend on this.

Place a piece of paper on the plywood and nail in the places marked with nails. Carefully remove the sheet from the plywood.

Next, we proceed directly to working with threads. Make a neat knot on the central top nail, pulling the tip diagonally. Pull the thread towards each nail so that an acute angle is formed each time.

Once all the nails are wrapped with thread, secure it and carefully cut off the tip.

Below are the basic schemes for creating corners and circles using the string art technique. Having mastered them, you will be able to perform simple, but at the same time effective and voluminous compositions.

Flower using string art technique

Having learned how to make a circle and an angle using the isothread technique, you can begin to create simple compositions with flowers. Dandelions using the string art technique look incredibly tender and beautiful. In addition, it is very easy to perform such a composition.

To create a picture you will need:

  • paper

  • pencil

  • white and green threads

Draw three circles in random order on a piece of paper. These will be the dandelions themselves. Also depict the leaves and stems of the flower. As in the previous master class, mark the nailing locations on the sheet with dots.

Attach the sheet to the plywood and nail the nails at the previously marked points.

Using white threads, embroider dandelion inflorescences in a circular pattern. To do this, fasten the edge of the thread to the central nail and lead it to the other points, forming sharp corners. The operating diagram is presented below.

To achieve the volume of dandelion leaves, divide them into several triangles and embroider each of them according to the principle of an angle.

Portrait using string art technique

If you have already mastered the technique of isona thread and are confident in your abilities, then it’s time to start creating spectacular portraits from nails and threads. As a basis, take a portrait of a loved one, a famous person, or a pet.

The creation of such a complex image begins not with the central part, as was the case in simple master classes, but with filling in the background. That is, first of all, denser areas of the image with shadow or clothing are covered with threads. After this, the remaining details are filled in, such as the face, hands, etc.

Even professional craftsmen use ready-made patterns in their work, since one incorrectly chosen direction of the thread can spoil the perception of the picture.

Try to make as few knots as possible, which simply have nowhere to hide. The thread tension should be maximum so that the pattern does not subsequently sag and lose its attractiveness.

The string art technique is a fairly new direction, which is just being mastered by needlewomen. Believe me, even a small piece of plywood, decorated with an image of nails and threads, will impress friends and family. Professional craftsmen who have thoroughly mastered the isothin technique earn good money by creating unique portraits and three-dimensional paintings for sale.
