DIY polymerization chamber for powder coating. DIY powder coating equipment

Powder painting of metal parts with your own hands is not such a difficult task, the main thing is to know all the subtleties and act strictly according to the instructions. In addition, there are significant cost savings, because prices in salons for painting parts of metal mechanisms or spare parts for cars are quite high.

Required Equipment

In order for the process of self-painting to be practically no different from the factory one, it is necessary to choose a suitable place where the work will be carried out.

When the premises have been found, you need to collect and prepare the necessary equipment:

  • oven for polymerization (drying);
  • constant voltage source (about 25 kV);
  • powder paint sprayer (gun);

Accuracy and a little experience will not hurt in the work. But if it’s not there, it doesn’t matter; by following the instructions, you can avoid most mistakes and get quite a decent result.

Making a furnace

Polymerization is an important step in the hardening of powder paint. If this item of work is omitted, the paintwork will not adhere to metal surfaces. Therefore, equipment such as a furnace - also called a polymerization chamber - is necessary first of all. This thing is expensive, so you can make it yourself, from scrap materials. We will need (the polymerization chamber will have dimensions of 2x1x1 m):

  • profile pipe;
  • non-flammable thermal insulation (basalt slab);
  • sheet metal (can be ordered by size);
  • tangential fan;
  • Heating elements.

The instructions for assembling the stove consist of the following steps:

  1. Weld a frame from the profile.
  2. Put insulation in it.
  3. Cover the walls with sheet metal. Finish the outside with gypsum fiber.
  4. For convection in the chamber, install a tangential fan, welding it with a narrow outlet and a wide inlet.
  5. Insert the fan into the chamber. It will take in air at the top, drive it through the heating elements, expel it at the bottom, and then distribute it throughout the entire volume of the chamber.
  6. Install the heating elements along parallel walls and connect them according to phase distribution.
  7. Close the heating elements, leaving the fan open, the main part of which should be located outside the chamber (so as not to melt the winding).
  8. Install an electrical panel. True, it is better to entrust this work to a specialist.

The resulting equipment - a polymerization chamber - will have a power of 12 kW when warming up and 6 kW in operation.

Important! The energy source in such powder paint drying ovens can be not only electricity, but also natural gas and diesel fuel.

Painting tool - gun

To apply powder paint to a product, a special device is required. This is an electrostatic spray gun or a tribostatic powder spray gun. But buying expensive equipment for rare use is not advisable. Since in our case everything is made by hand at home, such a device can be made in about 10 minutes. Such a gun is easy to use, cheap and practical. The transition from one paint to another takes a few seconds.

Design and equipment of a gun for powder painting

How to make a powder paint gun:

  1. Take a regular plastic 1.5 liter bottle. The main thing is that it is dry and clean.
  2. Fill it 1/3 with powder paint, screw it with a metal plug.
  3. Make small holes in the cork. The more holes, the better the application. Clean the outside of the plug from any burrs left after piercing.
  4. Connect the positive wire from the high-voltage source to the plug.

For this purpose, you need a converter that can deliver 25,000 volts DC. These are used in stun guns, lighters for gas stoves, boilers and speakers. They can be powered by batteries or accumulators, converting 3-6 volts into the required 25 kV.

Use caution when working with high voltage. It is best to have the converter assembled by a qualified electrician.

After all the manipulations, you get a pretty decent pistol.

Little things you can't do without

Before starting painting, you need to carefully ensure that all operations take place under ideal conditions:

  1. Excellent lighting is essential. Use fluorescent lamps. Powder paint adheres perfectly to a regular lamp.
  2. You need good ventilation with two motors (inlet and outlet). Additionally, you will have to wear a gauze bandage, or better yet, a professional respirator.
  3. We will have to invent a way to collect the remaining powder paint. In the initial stages, use an old powerful vacuum cleaner.

When everything is carefully prepared, you can start painting the necessary parts yourself.

Technology

The process of painting metal parts with powder compositions can be divided into three stages. These are surface preparation, direct painting (spraying) and consolidation of the result (polymerization).

Preparatory stage

He's the most important. The result of the work depends on how well the surface is prepared for painting. Follow these instructions:

  1. Take a regular clean cloth and clean the entire surface of the workpiece from dust and dirt.
  2. Use sandpaper or specialized metal brushes to clean areas with corrosion.
  3. Degrease the part with a solvent, this will increase the adhesion of the surface to the paint.
  4. Perform priming. To do this, coat the product with paint based on inorganic substances. Thanks to this layer, the risk of air and moisture penetration under the dried paint is eliminated.
  5. Apply a layer of sodium compounds and chromium nitrate on top of the part. This process is called passivation. It is carried out so that rust does not appear during the preparation of the part for painting. All the steps are quite simple, so everything can be done at home with your own hands.
  6. Dry the workpiece in a homemade oven.

Important! If the part has a very complex configuration, is heavily soiled and corroded, soak it in an alkali solution.

Powder coating the part

The next stage after the preparatory stage is the actual coloring. Everything is quite simple here: place the part in the spraying compartment, connect and secure the negative wire from your power source to it. If you turn on our converter and bring a bottle with a metal cap to the part at a distance of 20-30 mm, we will see sparks jumping, this means that the voltage is enough to apply powder paint.

To do this, press on the bottle so that part of the powder, along with the air, is blown out of the holes in the cork. Under the influence of high voltage, paint particles become electrified and stick to the product being painted.

Some of the powder will still spill onto the floor, so lay down some newspaper to catch it later.

Advice! If you plan to achieve fire resistance of a part using painting, buy fire-retardant coatings for metal (Negorin, Polistil and the like).

After applying the powder paint, the process of creating a cured polymer layer begins.

Polymerization

The essence of this process is that the painted part is installed in a special oven. There she is exposed to high temperatures for a certain period of time.

To do this, you will need a self-made oven for polymerizing powder paint. For the process to go smoothly, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Follow the recommendations developed for each specific paint.
  2. Ensure that each part is heated evenly.
  3. Observe the exact polymerization time. When it has expired, remove the part from the chamber and leave it in the open air to cool completely.

The use of this method of painting with powder compositions is ideal for those who like to do everything with their own hands. It takes quite a long time to make a polymerization oven yourself, but there are significant cost savings and a high-quality coating.

Good afternoon

I wrote about problems with a high-voltage powder coating unit, see Post #7:

In the description of making a spray gun:

in Post #11 Aldar Kose wrote:

at the same time very good I wanted to understand how a 30 kV power supply works.. and how to make it..

Here's what I got.

In those days I did not have the Internet, PCAD and time. I had to quickly come up with something. I think I found an idea in Radio magazine.

I assembled the diagram:

and it worked.

ATTENTION:

The circuit is galvanically connected to the supply network. To ensure correct connection of the phase and neutral wires of the power supply network, there is a power cord with three contacts.

To isolate from the network, you can use a 220V to 220V transformer.

Circuit operation:

When the unit is connected to the network, the left LED lights up. When the circuit is switched by the foot switch, both LEDs light up and the circuit begins to work.

With a negative half-cycle of the supply voltage, current cannot pass to the collectors of the transistors and the output voltage switch VR1 (closing diodes). The diode in the circuit of transistor VT1 protects the base junction of the transistor from a negative voltage at a level of about -0.6V.

After the supply voltage passes through 0 to the positive half-cycle and reaches approximately 0.6V at the base, transistor VT1 opens and the voltage at the collector decreases to the saturation voltage of the transistor. At the same time, capacitor C5 and capacitors C6, C7 are charged. When the point of maximum positive amplitude of the supply voltage (+311V) is reached, C5 is charged to the maximum (311V minus the voltage drop across the two open diodes). C6, C7 are charged to a voltage determined by voltage divider VR1 and accompanying resistors and diodes. After the maximum amplitude of the supply voltage has passed, capacitor C5 begins to gradually discharge through the VT1 circuit and the resistance in the collector circuit is M16. Since VT1 is open, transistor VT2 is closed. When the supply voltage passes through 0 to the negative region, transistor VT1 closes, transistor VT2 opens and the capacitor quickly discharges through VT2 and opens the thyristor. In this case, the charged capacitors C6, C7 are discharged through the primary winding of a six-volt ignition coil for a motorcycle. A high voltage pulse appears on the secondary winding of the ignition coil. The KD202D diode allows several oscillations after the thyristor is opened in the circuit of the primary winding of the coil. After the voltage multiplier, a negative high-voltage DC voltage arrives at the output of the unit. This voltage is supplied through a shielded high-voltage wire to the electrode of the sawing gun. The metal part of the gun body is grounded through the wire shield. The part to be painted is connected to the block body by a separate wire.

Display oscillograms at different points.

The oscillograms are displayed from top to bottom:

1. Supply voltage output.

5. Voltage on capacitors C6, C7 when the output voltage switch is in the lower position.

6. Voltage on capacitors C6, C7 when the output voltage switch is in the upper position.

(Misunderstanding (forgotten) about 4. - it seems like the voltage at the control terminal of the thyristor, but then at the 4V location there should be approximately 3.5V).

Design.

1. Photo of a buried block

2. Photo without cover and front

3. Photo from behind.

The air duct is designed so that intense air flow passes through the protective covers. The air should come from below and pass through the suspended parts. The temperature will be evenly distributed throughout the entire volume of the device, which will ensure quality work. The furnace will be controlled using a control unit. He will set the parameters of the heating elements and start the fan. It will be easy for them to control the temperature in the chamber. The control cabinet must have:

  • indicators and sensors for the temperature of heated air in the working chamber,
  • automatic for starting the fan and heating element,
  • automatic shutdown of the device in case of an accident.

Control sensors are mounted so that one is on top, the other is on bottom. They should be equally distant from the heating elements. It is advisable to buy a factory unit that will control the processes in the chamber. The device will be more functional. A thermostat with automatic control will set a more precise operating mode.

Do-it-yourself powder painting requires special equipment, which you can purchase or partially make yourself. Regardless of the decision made, this is a rather labor-intensive and costly process. But this option for applying paint is one of the most effective, since the resulting coating is durable and durable.

What you need for work

The powder painting method involves the use of suitable equipment and devices, as well as dividing the process into sections.

For quality work you will need:

    Cleaning area. All parts undergo mandatory training. At this stage, the old layer is removed and degreasing is carried out. The process can use manual or specialized tools. If you plan to carry out constant cleaning, then sandblasting equipment is the best solution.

A convenient location of all areas should be provided; much attention is paid to the suspension system. Using a hanging trolley can make the task easier. Placing equipment even in a minimal amount will require a fairly spacious room, although some areas can be combined if desired.

Powder painting equipment: selection and self-production

Many of the necessary tools and devices can be made with your own hands. This will save a lot of money, but will require a lot of effort and time. To obtain optimal results, it is recommended to purchase some equipment.

Spray

The sprayer is one of the most important tools; the quality of the spraying determines how the coating will turn out. Therefore, it is better to refuse to create a device yourself and give preference to ready-made options. The principle of painting is that paint particles, passing through the gun, acquire a certain charge.

The device comes in two main types:

  1. Electrostatic. The particles in it are charged from external influences. It can be used to paint with any type of powder composition.
  2. Tribostatic. This option is simpler; the particles acquire a charge due to rapid departure from the nozzle and friction with each other. This spraying method requires compliance with certain conditions; the quality of the coating is affected by humidity. It is also necessary to correctly calculate the length of the connected hose, which depends on the power of the compressor.

Required Equipment

In order for the process of self-painting to be practically no different from the factory one, it is necessary to choose a suitable place where the work will be carried out.

When the premises have been found, you need to collect and prepare the necessary equipment:

  • oven for polymerization (drying);
  • constant voltage source (about 25 kV);
  • powder paint sprayer (gun);

  • profile pipe;
  • non-flammable thermal insulation (basalt slab);
  • sheet metal (can be ordered by size);
  • tangential fan;

Painting wheels with powder paint: advantages of technology, step-by-step instructions for painting

When car wheels lose their original appearance after long-term use, they do not need to be replaced with new ones. It is enough to use powder coating of the wheels, which will not only help restore the car to its original appearance, but will also extend the life of the car.

Powder coating of wheels: advantages and features

Powder paint is used only for materials subject to heat treatment and consists of applying the dye to a dry surface, followed by firing the product in a chamber at a temperature of +200 °C.

Powder paints can be silicone, epoxy, polyester and polyurethane. The former are the most heat-resistant, the latter are resistant to acids and alkalis. Polyurethane paints are resistant to solvents and abrasives, while polyester paints have increased corrosion resistance.

Painting forged and cast wheels has the following advantages:

  • increase in anti-corrosion properties;
  • protection of metal from chemical, mechanical and thermal damage;
  • increasing the impact resistance and durability of the product;
  • improvement of electrical insulating, physical and chemical properties of metal;
  • protection against pollution;
  • aesthetic appearance of the wheels, the ability to paint the wheels to match the car body or make them contrasting - the most popular are black, chrome, graphite, silver and bright colors (yellow, emerald, ruby, poisonous pink).

Coating the wheels with powder paint makes the metal waterproof and increases resistance to salt damage from chemicals on road surfaces in winter.

Equipment for work

Car repair shops use special equipment to spray paint on rims; at home, the work can be done with a minimal set of equipment:

  • sandpaper grit 200-600;
  • rags for removing dust;
  • metal brushes;
  • spray gun or spray gun.

In addition, you may need a sandblaster if it turns out that rust is corroding the metal. Instead of sandblasting equipment, you can use an electric drill with various attachments.

When painting rims yourself, it is advisable to have a separate room for the baking chamber, where powerful electric heaters should be placed. In addition, it is recommended to install a hanging system - attach a long wire to a beam in the garage, on which the disc for painting will be suspended.

Good lighting should also be provided - the quality of painting will also depend on visual control of the process. Experienced car enthusiasts advise installing fluorescent lamps. Their bright but cool light will allow you to see the painted surface of the discs as it appears in daylight.

In addition to lighting and heating devices, according to safety regulations, the garage must have a good ventilation system so that after removing the old coating from the wheels and applying new paint, the smell will disappear faster.

According to safety regulations, the electrical network must withstand heavy loads and have reliable grounding.

Base materials

Basic materials for powder coating include:

  • solvent;
  • primer for metal;
  • powder paint;
  • protective varnish.

DIY technology for painting wheels with powder paint

Stages of work:

  • Preparation of the product surface.
  • Coloring.
  • Firing in a chamber.
  • Applying varnish.

Preparatory stage

Alloy wheels must be prepared:

  • The product is cleaned with water to remove dirt and dust.
  • Oil stains are removed using a solvent, and the surface is additionally degreased.
  • The old coating, pre-impregnated with an alkaline or acidic solution, is removed from the surface of the disk using a sandblaster or electric drill.
  • Rust is removed from metal using brushes and sandpaper.
  • The surface is treated with iron or manganese phosphate to improve the adhesion of powder-coated metal.
  • The product is again washed to remove dust and excess substances and thoroughly dried.

If possible, it is recommended to refrain from using the sandblasting method when cleaning discs - abrasive particles can damage the metal surface, and the product will corrode faster. To remove rust, it is advisable to use chemical compounds.

If deep scratches remain after cleaning, they need to be treated with automotive putty, filling all the depressions and defects until a smooth surface is obtained.

Primer phase

After removing the old coating and preparing the disc for painting, the surface is degreased with a special solution, after which you can begin priming.

Powder primer is applied to a thoroughly dried surface from a distance of 30 cm - it will protect the metal from corrosion and prevent the appearance of rust. First of all, the product is applied to the inner surface of the product.

The primer layer promotes better adhesion of the paint to the metal and its uniform distribution over the surface. For reliability, it is recommended to apply at least 3 layers and dry each of them in a chamber. It is recommended to dry the primed product for 10-15 minutes; this condition applies to each applied layer.

Powder paint application

Painting should be done using special protective equipment (suit, mask, goggles, gloves) and a spray applicator.

Spraying of paint is also carried out at a distance of 25-30 cm using a spray gun, which under pressure delivers a stream of dye through compressed air onto the metal surface. The electrostatic voltage generated during operation of the sprayer allows the dye particles to be retained on the surface of the disk.

Painting in several stages should be done with each layer thoroughly dried, otherwise the undried layer will begin to bubble and ruin the appearance of the disc.

Then the product should be placed in the firing chamber.

Polymerization process

Polymerization involves heating air to a high temperature (about +200 °C) and then melting the coloring material on the surface of the disk. When heated, the powder paint particles melt, gathering into a viscous thick mass that forms a durable film. After the temperature decreases, the film polymerizes and hardens.

The polymerization process should last no more than 25 minutes, as when priming the product. However, depending on the material from which the discs are made and their size, the products can be kept in the chamber for 15-30 minutes. After baking, the product must be removed.

The painted disc should cool for about 8 hours. If the paint is applied unevenly or the color turns out to be unsaturated, you can coat the product with a second layer of spraying by re-placing the disk in the heated chamber.

After this, the product is removed and coated with 2 layers of protective varnish. This stage of work is the final one, Under normal conditions, complete hardening of the paint layer will take about 3 days.

Varnishing will extend the service life of car wheels and prevent early damage to the applied paint layer.

Currently, powder paint is successfully replacing paint and varnish materials used in various industries to solve decorative problems. In addition, powder paints for metal can withstand high temperatures. This is their main advantage.

How to paint with powder paint at home

How to paint with powder paint yourself? During the process, a plastic coating is applied over the metal. The powder composition after heating becomes liquid and acquires a bond with the metal. Powder paint chrome, alpha or triton differs from traditional coatings in its environmental friendliness and modernity. The only drawback is that in some aspects it is difficult to apply. But this will not scare enterprising people. If the surface is properly cleaned, even an amateur can do a great job.

Stages of applying powder paint

  1. First you need to determine what type of material you want to paint. After this, a suitable powder is selected. Thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer powder is used. Each of them was developed to obtain the best result on a different metal. Powder coating for rims may not be suitable for jewelry or small keychains.
  2. All threaded and swivel joints are dismantled. Every part that is not to be painted should be put aside. Disassembly is necessary to prevent gluing of all parts in the form of bearings, nuts, clamps, bolts during painting. Even when doors are powder coated, they are first disassembled and dismantled.
  3. The next step is to clean the metal using sandblasting. This way, you can get rid of dirt, rust and other foreign materials. Using a chemical solvent you can get rid of any grease, paint and oil, and old powder paint can also be washed off. Any metal alloy of aluminum, magnesium, and other elements is cleaned with a solvent and a brush. You can use sandpaper for sanding. To bring the material to a bare state, you need to use sandblasting. This method can be replaced with a grinder, a wire drill attachment, or sandpaper.
  4. Next, remove the remaining dirt from the material. Acetone can be used for this. Each part should be soaked in it or wiped with a cloth. Only after this can powder paints be used for painting.
  5. Now metal parts can be directly painted. To make a high-quality coating you need to have special tools. To do this, use a powder paint gun or sprayer. These tools electrostatically charge a powdered material so that it sticks to a grounded metal object. Thus, an even and high-quality coating is created.
  6. Before you start painting, you can take a metal primer and coat a flat metal surface. During application, an even and thin layer is created. You need to make sure that the electrostatic charge is connected to the area to be painted. Otherwise, the powder will not stick to the material without a charge.
  7. When the work is completed, you must wait until the composition hardens and be careful. Do not start cleaning and blow on the surface. Due to such actions, the paint may begin to peel off.
  8. The next step is to heat the heat resistant powder paint. You can heat the paint in a conventional oven or use infrared lamps. The coating is heated for 15 minutes to a temperature of 190 degrees. Also, a conventional oven can be used for these purposes, only then you cannot cook food in it.

Powder paints for metal

To quickly finish a damaged surface, powder paint in cans is used. This option can be used independently. In addition, this method can be used to paint discs with powder paint.

Powder paints can be used to paint suspended ceilings, office fittings, electrical appliances, industrial shelving and other metal objects.

Powder polyester paint has high mechanical properties. It is suitable for steel and aluminum products located outdoors. A similar coating can be used to coat agricultural machinery, car accessories, garden furniture and other metal products.

The most important element in the painting industry is the powder paint spray chamber.

A fairly stable gloss is formed with polyurethane paints that are water-resistant, resistant to mineral oil and solvent. With such paints, protection is provided for products subject to friction, abrasive wear, and chemical containers in which gaseous and liquid chemicals are stored. In addition, they are used as a primer when, for example, Triton powder paint is applied to the surface.

After applying the powder layer, it needs to be fixed. For this purpose, a chamber is used that polymerizes the composition. Here, melting occurs and a finished film is formed, which hardens on the surface of the parts. The chamber requires maintaining a high temperature. When powder paint for polymer decoration is heated, high-quality adhesion between the composition and the material is obtained, since the composition penetrates through the pores of the product. The same method is used to cover car rims.

For any metal, plastic, or wooden product, powder paint ral 9005 is used. It allows for convenient and cost-effective tinting. In addition, in the manufacturer’s catalog it is presented in different colors and textures. The choice can be made on any shades and textures, from silver or golden metallic to bronze and granite, so powder paints are effectively used when creating European decor. After all, they create both a relief texture and a glossy one.

Today, powder paint mixtures are suitable for use without prior preparation, so expensive procedures such as tinting may not be necessary. When the work is carried out efficiently, an anti-corrosion, impact-resistant coating with very reliable electrical insulation is formed. With sudden temperature changes, the film does not lose its quality.

Perhaps, after reading this information, you will have the idea of starting your own business. After all, now you know how to paint metal products with powder paint and you can put your knowledge into practice. The main thing is that you enjoy this activity and then you can reach your goal after weighing all the positive and negative sides.
