Correct replacement of light bulbs. How to change a light bulb in chandeliers, suspended and suspended ceilings How to change long lamps on a ceiling lamp

Over the past ten or fifteen years, installation of lamps in suspended ceilings has found widespread use. These ceiling structures are attached to the suspended ceiling of the apartment. Such a halogen Euro bulb in a spot can be quickly connected or removed. This will be discussed in this article.

Suspended ceiling as a light source

Before installing the suspended ceiling, a frame is assembled from wooden blocks or metal profiles, which are directly mounted to the concrete or wooden ceiling of the room. Then the ceiling covering itself is attached to the frame. The ceiling material for such a ceiling can be, for example, plasterboard. But such ceilings can also be suspended, in which the ceiling covering is made of strong synthetic material. These designs perfectly hide all defects in the main ceiling of the room and give it an even and smooth look.

Between these two ceilings (main and suspended), thanks to the assembled and fixed frame, a free space of up to 10 cm is formed. Electrical wiring for connecting future lighting and the main structural elements of the light source are hidden in this empty space. To connect lamps and various light sources, special holes are made in such a ceiling. A distinctive feature of this ceiling is the possibility of installing built-in lamps.

Very often, suspended ceilings are equipped with point light sources, which, of course, contain light bulbs. Anyone who assembled the structure of such a ceiling himself knows how to replace light bulbs. Those who had the installation done by the company may not have such knowledge; in this case, it is better to call a specialist or find the necessary information on replacement yourself and try to replace it.

In most cases, the main reason for replacement is its burnout. And the way to install another depends on what type of ceiling lighting you have - a regular chandelier or lamps.

If one of several bulbs in a pendant chandelier has burned out, do not immediately change it. In this option, it is more convenient and safer to wait until daylight and replace the burnt-out one in daylight. And if necessity forces you to start replacing in the dark, find an external light source, for example, a flashlight. You may need pliers and a screwdriver; it is better to wear gloves on your hands.

Before replacement, it is necessary to de-energize the light source being repaired by turning off the circuit breaker or wall switch.

The new light bulb should be on hand so that you can screw it in at any time.

When you turn on the lighting after replacement, never look at the light source or stand under it, because it is possible that the light bulb may be defective, and it may burst when turned on.

Type of lamps used in suspended ceilings

There are mainly four types of light bulbs used in suspended ceilings.

  • Halogen. This type can be installed with the least amount of space between the false ceiling and the main one. Halogen bulbs can light up a room quite brightly and are a little more difficult to replace than a regular light bulb. Care must be taken when replacing. The service life of this type of lamp largely depends on proper installation. In the household network there are frequent voltage drops, which do not have a positive effect on the operation of the light source. For this, it is recommended to use voltage stabilizing devices.
  • Regular incandescent lamps. Each of us has known these products since childhood, and changing them does not require much difficulty or knowledge. But ordinary lamps have one significant drawback: they heat up quickly and therefore are not suitable for all types of suspended ceilings.

  • Fluorescent lamps. This type of lighting, even despite its high cost, has become widespread. They are very economical and consume the least amount of electricity, and their lighting characteristics are much higher than previous models. They have a number of negative qualities - products with a hot start light up slower than other analogues, have a limit on the number of switches on and off, and they contain mercury vapor, which further complicates the disposal process.
  • LED bulbs. A more economical and long-lasting option for this type of ceiling. Their brightness sometimes exceeds the similar characteristics of luminescent products. The operating period of LED lamps reaches 72,000 hours of production, while a conventional lamp has only 1,000 hours.

When changing different lamps, it is necessary to take into account that they use two types of base. The first is with a regular right-hand thread and is used for a classic cartridge. Most of us know how to change a light bulb with this type. The second option is a G-shaped base with different types, the lamps are installed using the two pins provided. These pins perform a guiding function, and strong fastening occurs after a characteristic click.

Mounting methods

Three options are used for attaching various lighting sources, and the change is carried out in different ways. Before replacing a burnt-out light bulb, you must turn off the power and prepare a secure base to stand on. This could be a stepladder or stool. Replacement should only be started when it has cooled down, otherwise there is a risk of burns.

  1. The first mount is standard. This occurs by screwing the lamp into the socket. To replace it, you just need to unscrew it and screw the new one in until it stops.
  2. Two-pin fastening- this type of fastening is typical for halogen lamps; they are held in place using two metal guides. To replace it, you need to unlock the lock - holding the lamp with one hand, while bending the retaining ring with the other. Then they take out the light bulb and insert a working one. After a characteristic click, the latch is secured. For this procedure, the suspended ceiling does not require disassembly; the supporting structure of the lamp is not removed from the hole.
  3. Special cartridge. This mount predominates in fluorescent and LED lighting fixtures. When replacing, as in the previous version, remove the latch, take out the glass and unscrew the light source. This cartridge must be rotated ninety degrees when changing.

Replacing an incandescent lamp

Before replacing this type of lamp, first remove the shade or frame if necessary. Then, holding the socket, I unscrew the light bulb counterclockwise.

It is better to wrap the cracked lamp and remove it from the socket, while trying not to look at it to avoid getting splinters in your eyes. If the lighting fixture explodes, the remaining glass is also removed using any soft cloth, and the base is unscrewed with pliers. When screwing in a new light bulb, you don’t need to apply much force; it can break.

Replacing a fluorescent lamp

A fluorescent or energy-saving lamp, unlike an incandescent lamp, has a fluorescent tube. Changing such a light source is very simple; there is a choke next to the base, and with the help of this device it can be easily pulled out.

Replacing the LED lamp

When replacing a suspended ceiling light source, first turn off the power supply to the source by turning off the power supply. Then prepare any stable stand that you can stand on without the risk of falling, and you can conveniently change the light bulb. When replacing a lamp on a suspended ceiling, be extremely careful and careful, as this coating can easily be torn or cut.

To replace a lamp of this type, you must unlock the locking ring. Then take it out and select a working one with the same parameters. After replacement, insert the retaining ring into place and lock the lamp in the mount.

There are several tips when replacing a lamp in a suspended ceiling:

  1. Provided that the design of your ceiling provides for the presence of yellow LED lamps, but such lighting is not enough for you, purchase standard white ones. The lighting level will immediately increase, but the amount of electricity consumed will remain at the same level.
  2. To increase the service life of the lamp, do not handle it with bare hands; when replacing, it is better to use cloth gloves.
  3. Always remember that stretch ceilings may not withstand the effects of too powerful a lamp. To prevent damage to the ceiling, use lamps with a power of no more than 35 W.
  4. For the ideal effect of transmitting lighting to the ceiling in one room, use lighting fixtures of the same design. Thus, you will achieve not only the necessary lighting, but also an attractive appearance in the interior. And if, due to some circumstances, you cannot find the one you need, change them all.

And in order to prevent a similar situation from happening again, you should always purchase a few more of them.

When it comes to fluorescent lamps, many immediately imagine a white glowing tube on the ceiling.

The association is correct, but it does not give a complete picture of the many possibilities and advantages of this lamp, especially since the overwhelming majority of the population thinks that fluorescent lamps are not entirely suitable for apartments due to their bulkiness. Most often, they are used only to illuminate various types of work surfaces, for example, in the kitchen or workshop. But it is worth considering the fact that today there are a variety of fluorescent lamp options on the market, developed by modern designers. They can have different colors of light, mainly: daylight, cool white, warm white and warm. This feature distinguishes them from simple light bulbs. The shapes of fluorescent lamps are: tubular, compact and shaped. In order to light such a lamp, a starter is required, which is located in the area of the lamp base.

To replace a failed fluorescent lamp with your own hands, you need to follow a few simple rules
, and, regardless of the shape and length of the lamp, the replacement principle is the same:
. First you need to determine what exactly burned out: lamp, starter or throttle. If the lamp itself burns out, its ends turn black.
. When the lamp is noticeably darkened, in this case it must be replaced. For this, first of all, it is necessary to turn off the switch, i.e. de-energize it.
. Next you need turn the burnt-out lamp clockwise by hand and then pull it out.
. Insert new lamp replace the old one and turn it in the opposite direction.
. To turn on the light, to check how the new lamp lights up.

Don't forget about the burnt out lamp. It must be handled very carefully and with care as it contains mercury. It is advisable to place it in the same cardboard packaging in which you bought the new lamp. Although, according to the rules, you should pack a fluorescent lamp in a special container. You should not give it to children, and when throwing away a box with a lamp, you should ensure that it does not fall into the hands of anyone.

The popularity of fluorescent lamps is growing rapidly. This is explained by the fact that such lamps are characterized by high luminous efficiency, while consuming a very small amount of electricity. This feature attracts Russian buyers, since electricity becomes more expensive from year to year and the issue of saving becomes extremely pressing. And a fluorescent lamp requires only a fifth of the energy that an ordinary incandescent lamp consumes.

Fluorescent lamps have become widespread over the past few decades. Although more advanced light sources have appeared on the market, fluorescent light bulbs are still popular due to their efficiency and quality lighting. However, any equipment breaks down, so over time, fluorescent lamps will need to be replaced. How to change a fluorescent lamp will be discussed below.

Required Components

To replace the light source, you will need the following set of components and tools:

  • throttle;
  • starter;
  • 1–2 light bulbs.

Before changing the lamp, turn off the power supply. Working under voltage is unacceptable, as it is life-threatening. It is recommended to carry out repairs wearing protective gloves - this will prevent injury to the skin of your hands from sharp elements of the device.

Types of socles

An integral component of a lighting device is the base. This part is used to secure the light bulb in the socket and supply electricity to it.

The following types of cartridges are used in fluorescent light sources:

  1. E14. These threaded cartridges are called minions.
  2. E27. Medium-sized threaded plinths. They differ from E14 only in size.
  3. Pin base G. There are several types of sockets (they differ in the distance between the contacts) - G5, G13, G53. Also, the name sometimes contains a second letter indicating a specific model (for example, GU10).

Lamps with G5 and G13 socket

The most popular light bulbs in ceiling luminaires are equipped with G5 and G13 sockets. These sockets are especially often used for lamps in kitchens, bathrooms, and local lighting (for example, mirrors).

The most common cause of fluorescent light fixture failure is the lamp. Sometimes the cause of the breakdown is the throttle or starter. A burnt-out light bulb can be easily identified by the dark ring around the bulb.

Replacement instructions:

  1. We purchase a lamp of the required size and power. If difficulties arise in determining the characteristics of a lamp, we take it with us to the store. This will help the seller choose the right light bulb.
  2. Turn off the electrical appliance. To ensure safety, it is recommended to completely de-energize the room by turning off the electricity in the panel.
  3. We dismantle the lampshade (lighting fixture grille). The ceiling lamp is attached to the lamp body using latches or screws. Sometimes the lampshade is held on by the lamp itself. To dismantle the lampshade, simply pull on any of its edges.
  4. Unscrew the light bulb. We grasp the lamp with both hands (closer to the edges of the bulb) and rotate it along the axis 90 degrees. We pull out the light bulb carefully, but with little force, so that the contact pins come out of the guides of the socket.

  1. We mount the lamp in the lamp. We insert it into the cartridge until it stops, and then turn it around its axis 90 degrees. The direction of screwing does not matter.
  2. We check the operation of the lamp. If everything is done correctly, return the lampshade to its place. If the light does not appear, turn off the lighting and carefully move the light bulb (turn it slightly). If these attempts are unsuccessful, pay attention to the throttle or starter - most likely the problem is in them. Replacing the throttle and starter is a rather complex operation and is best left to a specialist. In this case, it is recommended to install a new lamp, since the cost of repair work will exceed the cost of purchasing a new lighting device.

Lamps with G23 socket

Bases of subtypes G23, 2G11 and GX23 are most often used for local lighting - in table and wall lamps. The sockets differ in size and shape, but the principle of contact between the light bulb and the socket is the same everywhere.

The lamp is replaced in the following order:

  1. We buy a light bulb.
  2. Turn off the electricity.
  3. Unscrew the lamp from the socket. Carefully pull it by the edge of the bulb towards the lampshade. The movement must be a bending motion to remove the bulb from the retaining clip. This must be done carefully, without damaging the retaining bracket. When the light bulb is released from the clamp, pull it out, slightly swinging it in the direction opposite to the socket.
  4. Installing the light bulb into the lamp is done in the reverse order. You need to insert the lamp into the socket and press the end of the bulb to push it inside. The successful installation is indicated by the click of the locking mechanism. Movements should be confident, but careful. It is important not to damage the plastic retainer, as it gradually wears out and breaks easily.

Note! A fluorescent lamp contains 3–5 milligrams of mercury. This element is extremely toxic. It is unacceptable to throw away fluorescent light sources along with other garbage.

Replacing a fluorescent lamp is a simple operation that even a novice home craftsman can handle. To complete the task, you only need attentiveness and accuracy.

The fluorescent lamp is very common due to its efficiency. The lifespan of such lamps is quite long, but still not infinite. You can learn how to easily and quickly replace a fluorescent fluorescent lamp, and what nuances need to be taken into account when replacing them, from this article.

Such lamps are most often used in ceiling lamps, to illuminate the work surface of kitchens, in bathrooms, as lighting in mirrors, etc. Lamps are available in various sizes and wattages.

In most cases, the reason for the lack of glow is the lamp itself, although sometimes the culprits are the inductor (ballast) or (if present) the starter. A burnt-out lamp can most often be identified by a dark-colored ring on the bulb near one end of the lamp.

Replacement procedure

1. Turn off the lamp. If the lamp has burned out and you are not sure whether the lamp is on or off, it is better to look at the panel.

2. Remove the lamp shade or grille to provide access to the lamp. Transparent shades of ceiling lamps can be attached to the lamp body with screws or latches. Inspect the lamp and unscrew the screws, or release the latches and remove the lampshade or reflective grille.

On small single-lamp lamp models, the shade is often fixed to the lamp itself. To remove such a lampshade, simply gently pull it, starting from any edge. After this, you will have access to the lamp for replacement.

3. Remove the lamp. To do this, take both hands closer to the edges of the cylindrical bulb of the lamp and rotate it around its axis 90 degrees (the direction of rotation does not matter). Gently pull the lamp away from the fixture. The contact pins of the lamp should come out of the socket guides with little effort.

4. Buy a lamp of a size and power that matches the parameters of your lamp. If you cannot accurately determine the characteristics of a burnt-out lamp, take it with you to the store so that sales staff can select the correct replacement lamp.

5. Install a new lamp into the fixture. To do this, carefully insert both ends into the socket until it stops and carefully rotate the lamp around its axis 90 degrees (the direction of rotation is still not important). In some cases, you will feel a slight click as the lamp locks into position.

6. Turn on the lamp and check its functionality. If everything works fine, reinstall the lampshade or decorative grille. If the lamp does not light up, then turn off the lamp switch and try to carefully move or slightly rotate the lamp in the socket, or remove it and install it again.

If, after all attempts, the installed working lamp refuses to light, most likely the problem lies in a burnt-out inductor (replacing it is often comparable in cost to the cost of the lamp) or starter. All these parts are located inside the lamp body, and replacing them will require additional skills, especially replacing the choke.

If you do not have independent experience in performing such work, entrust it to a specialist or buy a new lamp if the cost of repair is equal to the cost of the lamp itself.

We should also talk about replacing a burnt-out fluorescent lamp in a tabletop office or home lamp. Such luminaires mainly use fluorescent lamps with sockets such as G23, GX23, 2G11, etc.

There may be some differences in the size and shape of the bases, but the principle of connecting the lamp to the lamp socket is the same for all. Thus, these instructions can be applied to all such lamps.

Replacement procedure

1. Before removing a fluorescent lamp with a G23 socket from the lamp, it is necessary to turn off the lamp, i.e. unplug the power cord from the outlet.

2. Place the lamp on the table and turn the shade up so that it is convenient for you to remove the lamp. Most often, the free end of the lamp is attached to the lampshade using a special plastic clamp.

In order to remove the light bulb from the socket, first gently pull it by the edge of the bulb in the direction from the lampshade, as if bending it, thereby removing it from the retaining bracket. If this bracket is already broken off (a fairly common occurrence), then skip this step.

Take the lamp with your hand (grab it with your fingers) by the bulb and simply pull it, shaking it slightly, in the direction from the socket hidden in the lamp body. The lamp should, with slight resistance, jump out of the socket.

3. Buy a new lamp. If you cannot unambiguously determine the size of the lamp and the type of base, then take the burnt-out fluorescent lamp with you to the store or market when you go to look for a replacement. This way, the seller can easily select the new lamp you need.

4. Install the lamp in the lamp. Once you have mastered the procedure for removing the lamp, it will not be difficult for you to do the reverse. Insert the new light bulb with the base into the socket and press the end of the bulb, pushing the light bulb into the socket. It should go into the cartridge all the way with a barely noticeable click.

Be careful when inserting the bulb back into the plastic retainer. Over time, the plastic of the retainer becomes extremely brittle and can easily break. At the same time, do not be too upset if this happens - this will not affect the operation of the lamp in any way.

IMPORTANT: A fluorescent lamp contains 3 to 5 mg of mercury, a very toxic metal. You should absolutely not throw away used lamps with household or construction waste. As a result of damage to the bulb of such a lamp, mercury will be released into the environment. Please ensure safe disposal of the fluorescent lamp.

Due to their efficiency, fluorescent devices have become widespread. Even competitors such as LEDs were not able to significantly shake their position due to the lower price for the product. Despite their long service life, lamps, like any equipment, sooner or later fail. There are several ways to change a fluorescent lamp and they depend on the design of the lamp and the type of base.

You can carry out this operation yourself without calling a specialist. However, it is worth remembering a number of nuances when working with a device that contains mercury.

Before you start replacing the device, you need to understand what exactly has burned out: the starter, the inductor or the lamp itself. The first 2 elements are externally deformed and smell of burnt wiring. But the darkened edges indicate the failure of the light bulb.

You can start work only after the room has been de-energized. Compliance with safety precautions when replacing elements in a fluorescent lamp should come first. Also, to prevent hand injuries from sharp edges of devices, all operations must be carried out wearing protective gloves.

Important! Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare a working lamp, throttle or starter, depending on which element requires replacement. A screwdriver and stepladder may be additionally required if the lamp is located on the ceiling.

Types of bases and features of replacing light bulbs with them

The base is an important element, necessary not only for mounting in the socket, but also for supplying current to the electrodes of the device. There are 3 types of bases used in fluorescent lamps:

  • E14 – minions with screw thread;
  • E27 - medium-sized threaded, slightly larger in size than E14;
  • G (5, 13, 23) – pin.

Subspecies of the latter differ in the distance between contacts.

G5 and G13

Fluorescent lamps of this type are most often used for local lighting, for example, mirrors in the bathroom or ceiling lights in the kitchen. The G5 and G13 sockets differ from each other only in size. The algorithm for installing and dismantling lamps equipped with them will be the same.

First, you need to purchase a replacement fluorescent lamp of the appropriate model. If the exact characteristics cannot be determined independently, then you can take the device with you to the store, where the seller will select its analogue.

Then you can begin dismantling, turning off the electricity in advance. To do this you will need to remove the lampshade. If it is made in the form of a grid, like most office fluorescent lamps, then simply unscrew the screws or remove the latch and then gently pull it down.

Replacement is carried out by inserting the new device into the chuck until it stops and then turning it the same 90° around its axis. Then you need to check the operation of the fluorescent light bulb by turning it on and off.

If the device does not work, then you should check the throttle and starter; there may be a problem with these components. However, in this case, experts recommend replacing the entire lamp at once, since repair work will cost about the same as a new lighting fixture.

Important! Spent fluorescent lamps should not be thrown into household waste. Their disposal is carried out by special licensed organizations.

G23

This subspecies is most often used when equipping wall lamps. Replacement in this case occurs as follows:

  • electricity goes out;
  • the lamp is unscrewed by pulling it towards the lampshade and removing it from the fixing clamp (requires care in order to avoid damage to the retaining bracket);
  • a new lamp is installed by pressing the end of the bulb and inserting it into the retainer.

Afterwards, you need to check the operation of the daylight device in the lamp by turning it on and off.

Sequence of actions when replacing lamps

The replacement algorithm may depend not only on the type of base, but also on the design of the device.

Recessed luminaires

Recessed luminaires are often mounted in a suspended ceiling. They do not protrude above its surface and are easily and securely attached. Reflectors allow you to adjust the radiation spectrum. Fluorescent lamps are often used to illuminate plants in greenhouses, thereby stimulating their rapid growth and development.
